To tackle such practices, the Indian government has brought several measures to strengthen the security of Aadhaar and provide control to the resident to protect the personal data. One such feature to protect the security of Aadhaar is the lock and unlocking of Aadhaar.

How To Lock Your Aadhaar

Locking Aadhaar card means that you will be locking your 12 digit Aadhaar number and not the whole document. To use your aadhaar, you can use the 16 digits Virtual ID (VID) for all forms of authentication, and it will be applicable for all official-based chores. 

Locking biometrics is another great option to choose as a fraudulent can change your biometric details or use the existing ones for their misuse. The facility of locking biometrics aims to strengthen the privacy and confidentiality of resident’s biometrics data.

Once an Aadhaar is locked, the user is unable to perform any sort of authentication by using UID, UID Token & ANCS Token for Biometric, Demographic & OTP Based authentication. This can be done to prevent any misuse of the official document. 

To lock aadhaar, the user first must have their 16-digit VID. If absent, any user can retrieve it back with the simple process of SMS verification or by visiting a portal office. To get VID using SMS service, send – GVID Space Last 4 or 8 Digit of UID. SMS to 1947.

Then, to lock the aadhaar, open the Resident portal and visit ‘My Adhaar’. Now, navigate to Aadhaar Services and click on Lock & Unlock. Select the UID Lock radio button and enter your UID number, full name, and pin code as in the latest details.

Now, enter security code and click on Send OTP or select TOTP. Finally, simply click on submit and your aadhaar card number or the UID will be locked successfully. This way, you can lock your aadhaar number and use the VID for further assistance.

To lock one’s biometric details, open Resident Portal, go to My Adhaar and click on Aadhaar Service. Now, tick on the ‘Lock/Unlock Biometrics’ option. Next, enter your Aadhaar or VID number, and the captcha code and get OTP on your registered mobile number. 

Finally, enter the OTP and submit the application for locking. Your biometrics will be locked until you unlock them back again. To unlock the aadhaar card details, the steps are as simple as locking. These are mentioned down below. 

 

How to unlock Aadhaar number or Biometric Details

If the aadhaar cardholder wants to unlock UID, they can simply do so on a portal. After unlocking resident can authenticate using UID, UID Token & ANCS Token for Biometric, Demo & OTP Based Transaction, and also he can authenticate with VID.

To unlock the UID, the user must have their VID number with them. You can receive the latest ones by the SMS service. To receive the VID number on your registered mobile number, RVID Space last 4 or 8 digits of UID. SMS to 1947. Ex- RVID 1234

Now, open the Resident Portal and select the Unlock radio button. Now, enter the latest VID that you received on your mobile number and enter the security code. Click on Send OTP or select TOTP and click on Submit. Your UID will be unlocked successfully.
