20 Things You Could Actually Buy at the Price of the iPhone Fold

The iPhone Fold Costs ₹3 Lakh — Here's What Else That Buys You

things to buy instead of iPhone Fold

Apple just launched its first folding iPhone, and the price tag lands somewhere around ₹3 lakh once you account for Indian pricing, taxes, and the inevitable “limited stock” markup. That’s not a phone. That’s a life decision.

So before anyone hands over three lakh rupees for the privilege of owning a screen with a hinge, here’s a list of 20 things that same money could buy instead. Some are practical. Some are ridiculous. All of them last longer than a phone’s resale value after the first software update breaks something.

Things to buy instead of the iPhone Fold, which will cost you 3 lakhs

    1. A Royal Enfield Bullet 350, Fully Kitted Out

Skip the fold, buy the road. A brand-new Bullet 350 costs a fraction of this, and what’s left over covers registration, insurance, a proper riding jacket, a good helmet, and enough fuel for a trip from one end of the country to the other. One of these turns heads. The other just turns off when you forget to charge it.

    2. A Food Truck Startup

This is the one that actually builds something. A decent secondhand food truck, a gas setup, the FSSAI license and permits, your first month of ingredients, and a little cushion for the slow days when nobody’s hungry — all of it fits inside this budget. At the end of it, you own a business that makes money. The phone just loses value the second you peel off the plastic.

    3. A Down Payment on Land, or a Small Plot Outright

In plenty of tier-2 and tier-3 towns, this amount either buys a small agricultural plot outright or covers a serious chunk of a studio apartment deposit. One option leaves you holding a property deed. The other leaves you holding a phone that folds in half, which is also roughly how fast it depreciates.

    4. A Two-Week Trip Across Four Countries

Flights, boutique stays, and no need to skip the good restaurants — this budget covers a proper two-week run through places like Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, and Turkey. You’ll come back with sunburn, souvenirs, and memories. The phone crowd comes back with a slightly better selfie camera.

    5. Fifty Grams of Gold

The phone depreciates from the moment the box opens. Gold does the opposite. Whether it’s coins or sovereign gold bonds, this is one of the only items on this list that’s actually designed to be worth more later instead of less.

    6. Chai and Samosas for the Entire Office, for Two Years

At a generous ₹500 a day, this covers close to 600 days of tea, coffee, and snacks for an entire friend circle or office floor. That’s almost two years of being everyone’s favorite person at 4 pm. Try getting that kind of loyalty out of a folding screen.

    7. A Full Home Cinema Setup

A massive 75-inch 4K OLED television, a proper Dolby Atmos soundbar system, a PS5 Pro, and a recliner sofa that makes getting up feel like a personal betrayal. This turns a living room into an actual theatre. A folding phone just makes your pocket weirdly shaped.

    8. Roughly 80 Years of Home Wi-Fi

At typical fiber broadband rates, this is enough to prepay high-speed internet for the rest of most people’s natural lives — and possibly into the next one. No more worrying about the bill. No more router tantrums. Just Wi-Fi, forever.

    9. A Reliable Secondhand Hatchback

Forget two-wheelers altogether. A clean, well-maintained used Swift or i10 fits comfortably into this budget, and unlike a phone, it keeps you dry in the monsoon and can carry more than your ego.

    10. A Decade of Streaming, Prepaid

Netflix’s top tier plus Apple’s full subscription bundle, locked in for well over ten years. Watch, listen, and scroll guilt-free for a decade while everyone else argues about which plan to renew.

    11. A Proper Home Gym

A power rack, an Olympic barbell and plates, a bench, a treadmill, and enough dumbbells to never need a gym membership again. This is the version of “getting your money’s worth” that also gets you in shape, instead of just getting you a notification about your screen time.

    12. A Full Solar Panel Setup for Your Home

Rooftop panels, an inverter, and battery backup — enough to meaningfully cut your electricity bill for years. It’s less exciting to show off at a party, but it quietly pays you back every single month, which is more than any phone has ever done.

    13. A Recognised Professional Certification or Coding Bootcamp

A solid data analytics, digital marketing, or coding bootcamp — including the certification fee — fits easily into this budget, with money left over for a laptop to actually use it on. One of these can change your income. The other just changes how your camera app looks.

    14. A Small Dairy or Poultry Venture

A few goats, or a starter batch of poultry with proper housing and feed, is a real small-business bet that many rural entrepreneurs have built entire livelihoods on. It’s not glamorous, but neither is watching a battery percentage drop while your phone does absolutely nothing new.

    15. A Full Scuba Diving Certification, Gear, and Trip

Open Water certification, your own mask and fins, and a dive trip to the Andamans or somewhere further out, all covered. You’ll see coral reefs and shipwrecks. The other option shows you a marginally curved display.

    16. A Complete Wedding Wardrobe

A tailored sherwani, footwear, accessories, and enough left over to cover a decent chunk of the photographer’s bill. This buys you looking sharp at every function for the next several years. A folding phone just buys you an awkward moment explaining the crease to relatives.

    17. A Top-Tier Gaming PC Setup

A liquid-cooled RTX build, a proper mechanical keyboard, a high refresh-rate monitor, and an ergonomic chair that doesn’t destroy your back by year two. Frame rates over fold rates, every time.

    18. A Full Tattoo Sleeve, Done Properly

Real studio, real artist, real aftercare — a full sleeve from a well-reviewed tattoo artist fits inside this budget with room to spare. It’s permanent, it’s yours, and it doesn’t need a software update to keep working.

    19. A Mutual Fund SIP, Running for Years

Instead of spending it all at once, this amount could seed a systematic investment plan that keeps compounding long after the phone would’ve been forgotten in a drawer. Less fun to post about. More fun to look at ten years from now.

    20. An Emergency Fund That Actually Lets You Sleep

Six months of expenses set aside, doing nothing more exciting than existing quietly in a savings account, ready for the day the car breaks down or the job gets shaky. Boring, yes. But it’s the one item on this list that could genuinely save you from a bad year — and no phone, folding or otherwise, can say the same.

    The Bottom Line

A folding phone is still just a phone. It makes calls, it opens apps, and within a year it’ll be sitting next to last year’s model, both equally outdated. Everything on this list either builds something, teaches something, protects something, or takes you somewhere. The fold doesn’t do any of that — it just bends.

That said, shauq ke koi limit nahi hoti. If someone genuinely wants the fold and can afford it, no spreadsheet of alternatives is going to talk them out of it — and honestly, it shouldn’t have to. This list isn’t here to stop anyone from buying one. It’s just here to make sure the decision comes with its eyes open.
