If you are in the mood for a creepy mystery that builds slowly, Netflix has something worth your time. Balaraw: Blood Island, a Filipino folk horror series. It is one of those shows where the mood does most of the scary work, and that is what makes it stand out.
What is the story about?
The story follows Sabina Tejeros, played by Janine Gutierrez. Years ago, her mother Rebecca disappeared without a trace. Now a mysterious clue leads Sabina to an uncharted island, and what she finds there is far stranger than she expected. Along with supernatural beings, she runs into dark secrets hidden deep inside her own family.
Netflix describes the show as an atmospheric horror mystery with an ensemble story and shades of Lost, while staying rooted in Filipino culture. The horror comes from local folklore, not from copying Western ghost stories. Some tags linked to the series also mention vampire fiction, which hints at more specific legends than a basic haunted house tale.
Who is in the cast?
Janine Gutierrez leads the series, and Agot Isidro plays her missing mother, Rebecca. Charlie Dizon plays Bulak Bernabe, who travels with Sabina to the island. The wider cast includes Ronnie Lazaro, Teroy Guzman, Archi Adamos, Nonie Buencamino, and Romnick Sarmenta.
Rae Red directs, and Epicmedia Productions produces. Gutierrez has worked with Red before on Babae at Baril, also known as The Woman and the Gun, and she won Best Actress for it at the 2019 QCinema International Film Festival. That history is one reason expectations are high.
What did the teaser and trailer show?
Netflix released a short clip that gives you a taste of the tone. Sabina is on a boat heading to the island when a passenger gets into a violent fight with the captain. She tries to step in and gets hurt.
The badly injured boatman then points at something off-screen with wide eyes, as if he had been trying to warn everyone all along. The clip ends with everyone staring in the same direction, clearly scared.
It is a small scene, but it tells you what kind of show this is. Tension is there from the very start, long before anyone reaches the island.
A story about family, not just scares
Gutierrez has said the real heart of the series is the bond between Sabina and her mother, and she calls it a very Filipino kind of closeness. The idea behind it is that we never really know who our parents were before they became the people we grew up with. That emotional layer is what gives the horror weight.
Gutierrez has also called it the first Filipino Netflix Original series to stream globally, and for many local fans it feels like a big moment for their industry.
What else should you watch?
If horror is not your thing every night, you will probably want something lighter to balance it. Netflix’s teen workplace comedy is a good choice, and our article on Minimum Wage Season 2 explains whether the pizza shop crew is coming back.
And if you want a story with a very different kind of secret, take a look at our piece on Drive: The Pretenders, a Prime Video romance about a fake engagement and a racing scandal.
Should you watch it?
If you like slow-burn mysteries with a strong emotional core, yes. The series is reportedly eight episodes long, so it is not a huge commitment. It leans more on mood and dread than jump scares, so keep that in mind if you want something fast and loud.
Balaraw: Blood Island will be streaming from October 29 on Netflix.
