Wi-Fi 8 Explained: What It Is and How It Will Be Different from Wi-Fi 7

Wi-Fi 7 was officially launched in 2024, and it has not yet reached all users. Even before it becomes widely available, several companies have already started working on the next generation—Wi-Fi 8. At CES 2026, brands like Asus showcased Wi-Fi 8 router concepts. Although the standard has not received official approval yet, these early teasers have created a lot of excitement. So, let’s understand what Wi-Fi 8 is and how it will differ from Wi-Fi 7.

    How Is Wi-Fi 8 Different from Wi-Fi 7?

In terms of raw speed, Wi-Fi 8 is not expected to be very different from Wi-Fi 7. Both are likely to offer similar maximum speeds. However, Wi-Fi 8 will focus more on better power efficiency and stronger connectivity.

According to early demos, Wi-Fi 8 will provide faster and more stable connections, even when the device is far away from the router. The risk of signal drops will be much lower, allowing users to enjoy uninterrupted streaming, gaming, and other heavy tasks.

Wi-Fi 7 already offers speeds of up to 46 Gbps, along with low latency and Multi-Link Operation (MLO). It is expected that Wi-Fi 8 will further improve these features, making connections more reliable and efficient. As per current estimates, Wi-Fi 8 could be officially rolled out by 2028.

    Companies Working on Wi-Fi 8

Asus has showcased a Wi-Fi 8 router concept at CES. The company claims that while the speed will be similar to Wi-Fi 7, Wi-Fi 8 will deliver higher throughput. This will reduce network congestion and prevent lag, even during heavy usage.

Broadcom has also introduced Wi-Fi 8-related components, which will be used in residential Wi-Fi 8 routers. Along with this, MediaTek has launched Wi-Fi 8 chips under the name Filogic 8000. The first devices powered by these chips could be launched as early as this year.
