Aadhaar is one of the widely used documentation for all government and non-government verification. It serves various purposes including linking bank accounts, age/ address proof, obtaining subsidies, KYC verification, IT Returns, and online and offline important financial transactions.

As having it can leave you in a safe spot, losing an Aadhaar card is not a scenario you want to face. A loss of an Aadhaar can lead to unwanted actions and misuse of your original and authentic credentials which gainers can use for their profit.

To tackle such practices, the Indian government has brought several measures to strengthen the security of Aadhaar and provide control to the resident to protect the personal data. One such feature to protect the security of Aadhaar is the lock and unlocking of Aadhaar.

Locking biometrics is another great option to choose as a fraudulent can change your biometric details or use the existing ones for their misuse. The facility of locking biometrics aims to strengthen the privacy and confidentiality of resident’s biometrics data.

Once an Aadhaar is locked, the user is unable to perform any sort of authentication by using UID, UID Token & ANCS Token for Biometric, Demographic & OTP Based authentication. This can be done to prevent any misuse of the official document.

To lock aadhaar, the user first must have their 16-digit VID. If absent, any user can retrieve it back with the simple process of SMS verification or by visiting a portal office. To get VID using SMS service, send – GVID Space Last 4 or 8 Digit of UID. SMS to 1947.

Now, enter security code and click on Send OTP or select TOTP. Finally, simply click on submit and your aadhaar card number or the UID will be locked successfully. This way, you can lock your aadhaar number and use the VID for further assistance.
