If you’re driving a vehicle in Delhi and your car doesn’t have a colour-coded fuel sticker, it’s time to take action. The Delhi Transport Department has made it mandatory to have both a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) and a colour-coded fuel sticker on vehicles.
This rule applies to both old and new vehicles. If you violate it, you could face a fine of up to ₹10,000. Notably, a similar rule was also implemented earlier around 2012–2013.
What is a Colour-Coded Fuel Sticker?
A colour-coded fuel sticker is a coloured label placed on the vehicle’s windshield to indicate the type of fuel it uses. The stickers are classified based on fuel type:
- Orange sticker for diesel vehicles
- Light blue sticker for petrol and CNG vehicles
- Grey sticker for other special fuel categories
This sticker is a mandatory part of the HSRP system, which the Government of India made compulsory in 2019 for all new and old vehicles.
Under Which Section Can You Be Fined?
If a vehicle owner fails to install the colour-coded fuel sticker, they can be fined under Section 192(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act. During a special drive in 2020, the Delhi government fined vehicles without HSRP and fuel stickers up to ₹5,000. This fine can now go up to ₹10,000.
