Procrastination: What It is, Why People Do It and How To Tackle?

“While we waste our time hesitating and postponing, life is slipping away.” Greatly said by a philosopher, Procrastination is one of the biggest challenges our generation has met in their life.

Procrastination is the act of delaying or putting off tasks until the last minute, or past their deadline. People, generally, engage in such type of manner due to the fear of any potentially negative consequences that could arise with their problems.

It affects all age groups, all the genders, communities, religions, and in all parts of the world. Procrastination is, supposedly, the main barrier that blocks you from getting up and making the right decisions and living the dream life you’ve thought of.

And why we are saying it because a recent study shows that people tend to regret more the things they haven’t done than the things they have done. Also, feelings of regret and guilt resulting from missed opportunities tend to stay with people much longer.

In this ever-changing world, keeping yourself away from all the unwanted feelings of loss wasted and a burden upon yourself is a common thing to experience. While it is not a serious problem, the regular performance of procrastination can bring numerous harms.

    Why Do People Procrastinate?

As you should know, will power of a person is tagged as the main reason behind procrastination. People who procrastinate more are said to be having low will power or less self-control. But little do you know that it is the Intrinsic Motivation that plays the role.

Intrinsic motivation is nothing but a target-achieved feeling that helps us to overcome the habit of putting things off daily. And there are many reasons, besides your inner exception, that is a vital asset to your procrastination.

    Reasons For Procrastination

    • Ignoring The Value of Time
    • Lack of self-discipline
    • Believing that you work better under pressure
    • Thinking that you can finish it at the last minute
    • Lacking the initiative to get started
    • Forgetting
    • Blaming sickness or poor health
    • Waiting for the right moment

    Types of Procrastinators

Not specifically speaking, procrastination is of various types and is seen in numerous people, each outshining a specific trait. All of these keywords may or may not include your specific type but they all correlate to each other in some way.

    1. Active procrastinators: Delay the task purposefully. This will generate feelings such as “Working under pressure allows them to feel challenged and motivated.”

    2. Passive procrastinators: Delay the chore as they have trouble making decisions and acting on them.

    3. Perfectionist: Fears from the perfection they aim for.

    4. Dreamer: Does not pay attention to the required details of a task.

    5. Overdoer: Takes unwanted time and struggles with finding the “Right” Time to start.

    Tackling Procrastination

With these five general types of procrastinators, the percentage of worry may increase in you a little bit. But no need to worry. As this utter feeling is an outward thing, there are few simple steps by which you can tackle procrastination.

    1. Try to make a to-do list

    2. Take baby steps in your process

    3. Recognize the warning signs and then move forward

    4. Eliminate distractions

    5. Reward yourself for task completion.

What kind of procrastinator are you? Figure that out and don’t hesitate to live the life of your dreams and free of regrets.
