    Don’t Be Shy Review

    Don’t Be Shy Review: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)

Don’t Be Shy is a colourful and easy-going coming-of-age film with plenty of Gen Z humour, friendship and romance. It is entertaining in parts and has some lovely ideas about growing up, but its predictable story stops it from becoming something truly memorable.

    Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
    Release Date: September 25, 2026
    Platform: Prime Video
    Language: English
    Genre: Coming-of-Age, Comedy, Romance, Drama
    Director: Sreeti Mukerji
    Producer: Alia Bhatt
Cast: Aarushi Bajaj, Piyush Khati, Bianca Arora, Ansh Duggal, Kunaal Roy Kapur and Neha Dhupia

What if you had your entire life planned at the age of 21? The perfect college, a successful career, a wealthy boyfriend, a dream job, and even two children. That is exactly how Shyamili Das, or Shy, sees her future in Don’t Be Shy.

The Prime Video film, produced by Alia Bhatt and directed by Sreeti Mukerji, takes a familiar coming-of-age story and gives it a colourful Gen Z makeover. It is full of pop culture references, social media humour, stylish visuals, and characters who speak in a language that will probably feel very familiar to younger viewers.

Shy has everything planned out on a vision board beside her bed. Her boyfriend Mayank is also an important part of that plan. She proudly sees him as one of her biggest achievements and even jokingly describes him as a “wannabe Mukesh Ambani.”

But there is a problem. Shy is not completely comfortable with who she really is.

She constantly tries to present a better version of herself to the people around her. She wants to appear confident, successful, and completely in control. Some of her attempts are genuinely funny, while others show how much pressure young people can put on themselves to maintain a perfect image.

The film cleverly uses Shy’s personality to talk about social media and the pressure to look successful all the time. She has created an image of the perfect life, but underneath that image is a young woman who is still trying to understand herself.

The comic-book style of storytelling adds to this feeling. The story is divided into chapters in its early portions, while Shy occasionally breaks the fourth wall and talks directly to the audience. This gives the film a playful and youthful feel.

Then everything changes when Mayank has his own life-changing moment during a trip to the mountains. Suddenly, the future Shy has planned begins to fall apart.

Tara, played by Bianca Arora, then enters the story and becomes an important part of Shy’s journey. Her entry is intentionally dramatic and brings another layer of fun to the film. There are also plenty of references to popular Hindi films and youth shows, including playful nods to DDLJ, Student of the Year, and Roadies.

However, the strongest part of Don’t Be Shy is not the romance. It is the friendship between Shy and Tara.

Tara is the kind of friend who supports other women instead of competing with them. She gives advice, offers comfort, and stands beside people when they need help. This gives the film one of its nicest messages: friendships between women do not always need jealousy or competition.

The film also touches on body image and the pressure women face to look a certain way. These portions are simple but relatable, especially in a story that is otherwise filled with exaggerated situations and glossy visuals.

Aarushi Bajaj carries much of the film on her shoulders. Shy can be irritating, dramatic, and overly obsessed with controlling her life, but Aarushi makes the character believable. She manages to show the insecurity underneath Shy’s confident exterior.

Piyush Khati makes an impression as Mayank, while Bianca Arora brings energy to Tara. Ansh Duggal also gets one of the more memorable emotional moments when his character talks with Shy about dreams, careers, friendship, and heartbreak.

Kunaal Roy Kapur and Neha Dhupia add support to the story, with their characters also helping Shy understand that life does not always follow the plan we make for it.

The biggest weakness is the screenplay. You can often predict where the story is heading, and some emotional moments do not have enough depth. The film wants to be heartfelt, but it usually chooses light comedy and glossy presentation instead.

The dubbing in the reviewed version also affects the viewing experience at times. Some scenes could have had more emotional impact if the presentation had been smoother.

Unlike a large-scale action drama such as The Paradise, which builds its world around violence and social conflict, Don’t Be Shy keeps things personal and youthful. Its focus is on relationships, friendship, heartbreak and the confusion that comes with growing up.

Don’t Be Shy is a pleasant watch if you are looking for something light, colourful and easy to follow. It understands the world of young viewers and has enough humour, friendship and pop culture references to keep things moving.

The film’s biggest strength is Aarushi Bajaj, along with the warm friendship between Shy and Tara. But the predictable story and lack of emotional punch keep it from becoming a standout coming-of-age film.

Its central message is simple: you can plan your entire life, but life will still surprise you. Sometimes, losing the future you imagined is what finally helps you understand who you really are.
