“Save Democracy” is trending on X (formerly Twitter) and across social media as India’s two biggest political camps use the same slogan against each other. On Sunday, the opposition INDIA bloc held a massive rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan over alleged “vote theft.” A day later, on Monday, November 2, Union Home Minister Amit Shah led the BJP’s own “Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy” march in Hyderabad.
With both sides claiming to be saving democracy, posts, videos, crowd photos and political attacks under the slogan have flooded timelines over the past two days.

The INDIA Bloc’s Ramlila Maidan Rally
The opposition’s campaign began on September 30, when Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced a nationwide “Save Democracy” movement after a meeting of 20 INDIA bloc parties. The campaign included district-level marches from October 2 to 8, a march by opposition MPs to the Election Commission, and a series of big rallies, with the largest planned in Delhi on November 1.
On Sunday, leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, Tejashwi Yadav and Left leaders marched from Kharge’s residence to Ramlila Maidan. Before the rally, Rahul Gandhi asked Delhi residents on X to “Save the Vote, Save the Nation.”
Organisers had expected up to 10 lakh people, while Delhi Police estimated the crowd at around 50,000. Around 10,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed across central Delhi.
What Did Opposition Leaders Say?
Rahul Gandhi directly targeted the Chief Election Commissioner. “Gyanesh Kumar will be removed from the post of Chief Election Commissioner. Gyanesh Kumar will go to jail,” he said. He also claimed, “Without Gyanesh Kumar, neither would Narendra Modi have become prime minister,” and called the 2024 general election “an illegal election, a stolen election.”
Kharge said, “Only if Modi goes will democracy survive.” Akhilesh Yadav called the rally the “Haldighati of democracy,” while Tejashwi Yadav said Ramlila Maidan usually hosts the Ramayana, but “today we have organised a Mahabharata for those who steal votes.”
What Is SIR and Why Is the Opposition Angry?
SIR stands for Special Intensive Revision. It is a large exercise by the Election Commission to check and update voter lists across the country, adding new voters and removing names that are no longer valid, such as people who have died or moved.
The opposition alleges that the SIR has been used to wrongly remove genuine voters from the lists. Rahul Gandhi cited a figure of 13.3 crore voters being removed. Opposition parties have demanded that all elections be held using ballot papers instead of EVMs and have asked the Supreme Court to hear the SIR cases quickly. Mamata Banerjee has demanded Gyanesh Kumar’s immediate resignation.
BJP Hits Back With Its Own “Save Democracy” March
The BJP has turned the same slogan against the opposition. On Monday, Amit Shah led a 1.5 km “Maha Padyatra” in Hyderabad from the Babu Jagjivan Ram statue in Basheerbagh to Moazzam Jahi Market, under the theme “Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy.” Union Ministers G Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar and Telangana BJP chief N Ramchander Rao joined him. Before the march, Shah offered prayers at the Bhagyalakshmi temple near Charminar.
In a post on X, Shah wrote, “Reeling from successive defeats in the elections, the Congress Party is now determined by any means to seize power.” He accused the Congress of “murdering democracy through their anarchic actions” and called on people to protect democracy “from the Congress Party’s nefarious attempts.”
The BJP has held similar marches in Faridabad and Rohtak in Haryana, and in Jharkhand, where the party is targeting the Hemant Soren government.
BJP Leaders on the Delhi Rally
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra called the Ramlila Maidan rally “a complete waste of time” and asked, “Where were the 10 lakh people?” He said that if the opposition believed the 2024 election was illegal, it should go to court. BJP president JP Nadda said India is not a “banana republic.”
The BJP also questioned the date of the rally. November 1 marks the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, and the BJP held a parallel march in West Delhi on the issue. Amit Shah said the rally rubbed salt into the wounds of the riot victims.
Fake AI Crowd Photos Go Viral
Along with the real rally videos, several fake images were shared widely under the trend. Fact-checking website BOOM found that some viral photos of “massive crowds” at Ramlila Maidan were made using AI tools and carried hidden OpenAI watermarks. One image even had a misspelled Hindi word for “Maidan” and distorted posters of Rahul and Sonia Gandhi.
Another widely shared photo, claimed to show protesters against Gyanesh Kumar, was actually from a Left Front rally in Kolkata in February 2019. BOOM rated the claims as misleading.
What Next?
The INDIA bloc has said this is part of a series of big rallies across the country, and the opposition is pressing for a quick Supreme Court hearing on the SIR cases. The BJP, on the other hand, is set to continue its counter-campaign with more “Save Democracy” marches in opposition-ruled states. With both camps using the same slogan, the “Save Democracy” trend is likely to stay active on social media in the coming days.
