Dharmendra Pradhan Resigns as Education Minister After Weeks of Student Protests

Dharmendra Pradhan Resigns as Education Minister After Weeks of Student Protests

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has stepped down. He sent his resignation letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, July 25, ending days of speculation and handing student protesters exactly what they had been demanding on the streets for nearly two weeks.

Pradhan announced the decision himself in a post on X. He said he was pained by the situation that had developed at Jantar Mantar and across the country, and that he did not want “anti-national forces” to take advantage of the unrest. He added that he deeply respects the aspirations and legitimate expectations of the country’s youth, and that he did not want students getting caught up in legal trouble when they should be focusing on their studies and careers.

The timing tells its own story. His resignation came on the same day police fired tear gas at protesters in New Delhi, and just hours before student leaders were due to sit down with union ministers for another round of talks. The government had reportedly asked for time until Saturday afternoon to respond to the demand for Pradhan’s removal. The answer came in the form of his exit.

    Why Students Wanted His Resignation

The protests were sparked by a fresh series of examination paper leaks, technical failures, and cancelled tests, problems that have dogged Pradhan’s tenure since the NEET-UG and UGC-NET controversies of 2024. For lakhs of students who spend years preparing for these exams, each new leak felt like a betrayal.

What made this movement different was who led it. The agitation was organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical online movement that started in May and quickly grew into a serious national platform demanding education reforms and Pradhan’s resignation. Jantar Mantar in Delhi became the nerve centre of the protests, but demonstrations spread to Mumbai, Bengaluru, Patna, and other cities, with protesters also occupying parts of Parliament Street.

The government did try to calm things down. PM Modi promised fast-track courts to deal with paper leak cases, but protest leaders dismissed the move as a distraction, arguing that leaks were happening because of incompetence at the top, not a shortage of courts. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International also criticised the government over police action against protesters and internet shutdowns.

First Big Concession from the Modi Government

Pradhan’s exit is being seen as the first major concession from the Modi government to the protest movement. When the news reached Jantar Mantar, cheers broke out among the thousands gathered there.

Pradhan had held the education portfolio since July 2021 and retained it for a third time when the new cabinet was sworn in after the 2024 elections. Ironically, as a young ABVP leader back in 1997, he had himself led a student agitation against a question paper leak in Odisha.

Who replaces him, and whether the protests actually wind down now, are the big questions. Student leaders had earlier said their demands went beyond one resignation and included structural reforms to the exam system. For now though, the streets around Jantar Mantar have something to celebrate.
