Step 1: Fill the Online Form Without Fail
This is the most important step right now. UPSC has asked all shortlisted candidates to log in at upsconline.nic.in and submit the online application form between November 11 and November 25, 2026. Many coaching sites call this the DAF-II stage.
This step is compulsory for everyone, even if nothing in your details has changed. If you do not submit the form, you will not get the interview e-summon letter.
A few things to keep in mind while filling it:
- Check every detail carefully, including your name, date of birth, category and education.
- If you applied while still in the final year of your degree, update your qualification and upload proof of passing. Not doing this can lead to cancellation of your candidature.
- Fill your service and cadre preferences with care. Your final allotment depends on your rank and the order in which you list your choices, so think it through and do not rush.
- Do not wait for the last day. Websites often slow down close to the deadline.
- Save a PDF copy of the submitted form. You will need it for interview preparation.
Step 2: Keep Your Documents Ready
You will have to show original certificates at the time of the interview. Start collecting them now, so there is no last-minute panic.
- Class 10 certificate or any other proof of date of birth
- Degree certificate and mark sheets
- Community certificate for SC, ST or OBC, and income and asset certificate for EWS, if claiming reservation
- PwBD certificate, if applicable
- Any certificate for age relaxation, such as ex-servicemen or domicile documents
- Photo ID proof and recent passport-size photographs
- Printout of the e-summon letter
Certificates for reservation and age relaxation must be dated on or before the closing date of the application, which was February 27, 2026. A certificate issued after that date may create problems, so check the dates now.
Step 3: Know Your Form Inside Out
Most interview questions start from what you have written in your application form. The board has your form in front of them, so anything in it is open for questions.
Read your form line by line and prepare for questions on:
- Your name and its meaning
- Your home town, district and state, including local issues, history, culture and economy
- Your school, college and subject of graduation
- Your work experience, if any, and what you learnt from it
- Your hobbies and interests. If you wrote “reading books”, be ready to talk about the books you have read recently.
- Your achievements, sports or extra-curricular activities
- Your optional subject
- Your service preferences and why you chose them
A good tip is to write down 10 to 15 possible questions for each line of your form and prepare short, honest answers.
Step 4: Stay Updated With Current Affairs
The interview is not a test of facts, but the board often asks for your views on current issues. Keep reading one good newspaper every day and focus on:
- Major national news and government schemes
- International relations and India’s foreign policy
- Economy, budget and social issues
- Big news from your home state
- Any news linked to your graduation subject or work field
The aim is not to remember every number. It is to have a balanced, well-thought-out opinion and be able to explain it clearly.
Step 5: Take Mock Interviews, But Not Too Many
Mock interviews help you get used to speaking in front of a panel, handling pressure and spotting weak areas in your form. Many coaching institutes offer free mock interviews to candidates who have cleared the Mains.
However, do not take too many. Taking 15 or 20 mocks with different panels can confuse you, as each panel will give different advice. Around four to six good mocks, spread over a few weeks, is enough for most candidates. Record them if possible and work on the feedback.
Step 6: Work on Your Communication
The UPSC interview is a conversation, not a debate. The board wants to see if you are fit for a career in public service. They look at qualities like:
- Clarity of thought
- Honesty and integrity
- Balanced judgement
- Confidence without arrogance
- Ability to stay calm under pressure
If you do not know an answer, say so politely. Making up an answer usually leads to more difficult follow-up questions. A simple “I am sorry, sir/ma’am, I am not aware of this” is perfectly fine.
You can give the interview in English or Hindi, or in another language listed in the Eighth Schedule, depending on the medium you chose for the Mains.
Step 7: Download the e-Summon Letter
UPSC will release the interview schedule and the e-summon letters on its website. No physical letter will be sent by post. In recent years, the Civil Services interviews have usually begun in January and gone on for a few months, held in phases.
Interviews are held in two sessions, forenoon and afternoon. In the past, candidates were asked to report at 9 am for the forenoon session and 1 pm for the afternoon session. Check the exact timing on your e-summon letter. Requests to change the interview date are usually not accepted, so plan your travel early.
Step 8: Plan Your Travel and Stay in Delhi
The interview is held at the UPSC office:
Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi – 110069
- Reach Delhi at least a day before the interview.
- Visit the venue area in advance if possible, so you know the route.
- Keep your train ticket. UPSC has been reimbursing travel costs for interview candidates, usually limited to the second or sleeper class train fare by the shortest route.
- Carry all documents in one file, along with photocopies.
Step 9: Choose a Simple, Formal Dress
There is no official dress code, but formal and simple clothes work best.
- Men usually wear a light-coloured formal shirt with dark trousers, and many choose to wear a blazer or suit. Formal shoes and a simple tie, if worn, complete the look.
- Women usually wear a simple saree or a formal salwar suit in soft colours, with light accessories.
The idea is to look neat and comfortable. Avoid anything flashy. Try the outfit once before the day.
Step 10: Complete the Attestation Form and Medical Exam
After the interview, a few formalities remain:
- DoPT Attestation Form: This is filled online on cseplus.dopt.gov.in. The form becomes available from the start of the interviews.
- Medical examination: Candidates are sent for a medical test at designated government hospitals, as per the Civil Services Examination rules. Keep the medical memo safe and follow the instructions given.
How the Interview Affects Your Final Rank
The final merit list is made by adding your Mains written marks (out of 1,750) and your interview marks (out of 275), for a total of 2,025 marks. Prelims marks are not counted.
For an idea of what it takes, the CSE 2025 topper Anuj Agnihotri scored 1,071 marks, with 204 in the interview. The final cut-off for General category candidates in 2025 was 963 marks. This shows how a good interview score can make a big difference to the final result.
Common Mistakes to Avoid After Clearing UPSC Mains
- Missing the online form deadline
- Writing hobbies or details in the form that you cannot defend in the interview
- Carrying certificates with dates after the application closing date
- Taking too many mock interviews and getting confused by conflicting advice
- Faking answers instead of admitting you do not know
- Ignoring current affairs after the Mains
- Reaching Delhi on the same morning as the interview
Final Word
Clearing the UPSC Mains puts you among the top few thousand out of more than five lakh candidates who appeared for the Prelims this year. The interview is your last step, and it rewards honesty, a calm mind and good preparation more than anything else. Fill your form on time, know your details well, and walk into Dholpur House as yourself.
