What Is the Movie About?
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the sequel to 2023’s massively successful The Super Mario Bros. Movie — the film that became one of the biggest animated hits in recent memory and helped reignite global interest in video game movies done right.
This time around, the adventure moves into outer space.

Princess Rosalina — the guardian of the Comet Observatory and adoptive mother to the Lumas — has been kidnapped by Bowser Jr., who wants to drain her powers to fuel a universe-destroying cannon in honour of his father, Bowser. Meanwhile, Mario and Luigi discover Yoshi, a friendly green dinosaur who hatched in Brooklyn and has been pursued back to his home world after accidentally breaking a dinosaur skeleton in a museum.
What follows is a galaxy-spanning adventure involving space travel, a hidden casino, a mercenary fox pilot named Fox McCloud, and a stunning revelation about Princess Peach’s origins — one that ties her to Rosalina in a way nobody expected.
It’s a bigger, more ambitious story than the first film, drawing inspiration from the beloved Super Mario Galaxy video games from 2007 and 2010 as well as the Star Fox game series.
The Full Voice Cast
The returning cast from the 2023 film is all back, and they’ve brought some impressive new names with them.
Chris Pratt voices Mario. Anya Taylor-Joy returns as Princess Peach, whose role is significantly expanded this time. Charlie Day is back as Luigi. Jack Black reprises Bowser with his characteristic theatrical energy. Keegan-Michael Key returns as Toad.
New additions make this cast genuinely exciting. Benny Safdie voices Bowser Jr., the film’s primary antagonist. Donald Glover brings Yoshi to life. Glen Powell plays Fox McCloud, the space pilot from the Star Fox universe. And Brie Larson voices Princess Rosalina, the new central character whose backstory adds real emotional weight to the film.
The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic — the same duo who helmed the first film — with the screenplay by Matthew Fogel.
How Did It Do at the Box Office?
Very well. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie grossed over $1.012 billion worldwide against a production budget of $110 million, making it the third-highest-grossing film of 2026 globally.
It also became the second-highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time — behind only its predecessor, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That’s a remarkable achievement for a sequel, especially in animation, where following up a massive original hit is notoriously difficult.
Critical response was mixed to negative — reviewers found the story somewhat overstuffed compared to the cleaner first film — but audiences clearly showed up in huge numbers, suggesting the film delivers exactly the fun, colourful, action-packed entertainment most viewers were looking for.

Is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Worth Watching?
If you enjoyed the first film or have kids who love Mario, absolutely. The animation is gorgeous, the space setting gives the film a visual scale the original couldn’t quite reach, and the new cast additions — particularly Brie Larson as Rosalina and Donald Glover as Yoshi — bring genuine freshness to the ensemble.
The Peach and Rosalina storyline adds something the first film didn’t have — an emotional core beyond just Mario’s adventure. Their connection is the heart of the film and gives it more resonance than a straightforward sequel might otherwise achieve.
At over a billion dollars worldwide, clearly a lot of people have already had a good time with it. Now it’s your turn. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is streaming now on JioHotstar in India in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
