The Last House Release Date on Netflix - Cast, Plot and Everything You Need to Know

If you’re looking for something genuinely tense to watch on Netflix this week, The Last House looks like it might be exactly that.

The science fiction thriller, directed by Louis Leterrier and starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura, arrives on Netflix on August 7, 2026. At 110 minutes, it’s a tight, focused film built around one of cinema’s most reliable tension generators — ordinary people trapped somewhere they cannot escape, with something unknown closing in around them.

    The Premise

The setup is deceptively simple and immediately gripping.

A family of four is suddenly sealed inside their own home. There is no warning. There is no explanation. There is no way out.

As their resources begin to dwindle and the days pass inside the sealed house, they must work together to survive — not just against the practical problem of running out of food and water, but against whatever mysterious, looming threat is keeping them trapped in the first place.

That unknown element is what makes the premise so compelling. Not knowing what is outside, not knowing whether it’s a force that can be reasoned with or fought, not knowing whether the house is protecting them or imprisoning them — these are the kinds of questions that keep a thriller moving long after the initial setup is established.

The screenplay is written by Matthew Robinson, and the fact that it takes place almost entirely within a single location puts enormous pressure on the writing and direction to keep things feeling alive and urgent across the full runtime. Leterrier is a director who understands how to build and sustain pressure, and this kind of contained thriller is exactly the format that demands that skill.

    The Director

Louis Leterrier brings serious credentials to this project.

He’s the filmmaker behind Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk, and Unleashed, with a career built on kinetic, tension-driven storytelling. More recently, he directed the fourth season of Stranger Things — the most ambitious and critically praised season of that series — which showed a willingness to work in darker, more psychologically complex territory than his earlier action work.

The Last House feels like a natural extension of where his sensibilities have been moving. A contained location, an unknown threat, a family under pressure — it’s the kind of film that lives or dies on atmosphere, and Leterrier has demonstrated he knows how to create it.

Cinematography is handled by Pål Ulvik Rokseth, with editing by Adam Gough. The score is composed by Yair Elazar Glotman, whose work in tension-heavy projects adds another layer of anticipation for what the film’s sound design will do with the pressure of the premise.

    The Cast

Greta Lee plays Riley and Wagner Moura plays Jason — the two adult members of the family at the centre of the story.

Greta Lee has been on a remarkable trajectory in recent years, with her acclaimed performance in Past Lives establishing her as one of the most compelling screen presences in American cinema. She brings a specific kind of intelligent, inward intensity to roles that makes her a fascinating choice for a thriller where so much depends on what a character is thinking and feeling beneath the surface.

Wagner Moura is equally well chosen. The Brazilian actor, best known internationally for his extraordinary work as Pablo Escobar in Narcos, has a quality of barely contained energy that suits a character who is presumably trying to hold a frightened family together while facing something he cannot fully understand or control.

The two leads are supported by Riley Chung, Emma Ho, Noah Alexander Sosnowski, Gabriel Barbosa, Sam Lerner, Audrey Anderson, and Sid Edwards in the film’s ensemble.

Why This One Is Worth Your Attention

Contained thrillers are a specific kind of pleasure. When they work, they work intensely — every scene matters, every piece of information changes what you think you know, and the confined setting that initially feels like a limitation becomes the very source of the tension.

The Last House has the ingredients to be one of the better Netflix originals of 2026. A director who understands pressure and atmosphere. Two lead actors at the peak of their craft. A premise that raises questions it can presumably answer in ways that genuinely surprise. And a running time that says the makers knew exactly how long the story needed to be and didn’t overextend it.

The film is produced by Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Kori Adelson, Louis Leterrier, and Oly Obst through Chernin Entertainment and 3 Arts Entertainment.

The Last House premieres on Netflix on August 7, 2026.
