PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie Review: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)

PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie sticks to a familiar formula of dinosaurs, rescue missions, and colorful chaos, but finds real heart in Marshall’s touching arc about overcoming self-doubt. It is simple, predictable, and exactly what its young audience wants.

    Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
    Genre: Animation, Family
    Runtime: 88 minutes
    Cast (Voice): PAW Patrol ensemble
    Release Date: August 21, 2026

Anyone who has watched a young child react to PAW Patrol knows the drill. The moment Ryder announces a mission, excitement takes over, both on screen and off it. PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie understands that devotion completely and wisely does not try to reinvent a formula that already works.

Instead, it delivers exactly what its youngest fans are hoping for: dinosaurs, an erupting volcano, a brand new pup, colorful rescue vehicles, and just enough chaos to keep everyone entertained from start to finish. The story kicks off when the pups crash-land on a mysterious island filled with dinosaurs.

There, they meet Rex, a pup who has been stranded on the island for years and knows more about these prehistoric creatures than anyone else. Before the team can even settle in, though, the villainous Mayor Humdinger’s greed triggers a volcanic eruption, putting both the island and its dinosaur inhabitants in danger.

Underneath the familiar good versus evil setup, though, this film really belongs to Marshall. The clumsy Dalmatian firefighter, usually there for comic relief, suddenly finds himself at the center of the story, forced to face something far tougher than any dinosaur or volcano: his own self-doubt.

Marshall has always been the pup who trips, slips, and gets things slightly wrong, and the film leans into that with genuine affection. His poor fire truck takes an almost comical amount of damage throughout the movie, leading to one of its funniest running jokes, with another pup joking that it has simply not been a good week to be Marshall’s fire truck.

It is silly and light, exactly the kind of humor that lands perfectly with young viewers. But that joke eventually grows into something more meaningful. Marshall starts to wonder whether the team would honestly be better off without a pup who keeps making mistakes.

What follows is a genuinely sweet arc about learning that being clumsy does not mean being incapable and that one failure does not have to define who you are. This is where The Dino Movie finds its real heart. At its core, Marshall’s journey is about refusing to give up on yourself.

He comes to understand that courage is not about never feeling scared or never getting something wrong but about being willing to try again anyway. And when he finally does, the rest of the pups and Ryder are right there to remind him that asking for help is never a weakness either.

It is a simple message, but that simplicity is exactly why it works so well for its intended audience. The film keeps returning to the core values that have always made PAW Patrol more than just a group of dogs with cool vehicles: kindness, bravery, friendship, teamwork, and belief in yourself.

The introduction of Rex reinforces this beautifully too. Rex, a pup who uses a wheelchair, is never framed as someone who needs saving. Instead, he is introduced as someone with knowledge and skills the rest of the team genuinely needs to succeed.

That thoughtful approach is really what elevates the film beyond its straightforward plot. Kids may show up for the dinosaurs and stick around for the rescue missions, but along the way, they are also absorbing gentle lessons about resilience, friendship, and looking out for one another.

Since children tend to watch films like this again and again, these messages- do not give up, believe in yourself, and ask for help when you need it—become familiar through repetition in the best possible way.

Visually, the animation is bright and full of energy, and the dinosaur and volcano sequences give the film enough scale to feel like a proper big-screen event. At a brisk 88 minutes, the movie moves quickly enough to hold its young audience’s attention throughout. A fun pop soundtrack addition, the Backstreet Boys’ Bottle Up, adds a nice upbeat touch to the overall mood.

PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie is not trying to surprise anyone. The villain is predictable, the lessons are stated plainly, and the emotional beats are easy to see coming from a mile away. But that predictability is part of its charm, making it an easy, enjoyable watch for tiny tots and their parents alike.
