Ram And Leela Movie Review: Love, Laughs, and a Little Bit of Alien Chaos

Rio Raj and Vartika Jain lead this offbeat romantic comedy that starts as a simple love story before turning into something far stranger, with mixed but occasionally genuinely funny results.

Ram And Leela Movie Review - Love, Laughs, and a Little Bit of Alien Chaos

Ram And Leela Movie Review: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)

Ram And Leela takes a genuinely unusual premise and mostly runs with it, delivering a few solidly funny stretches even as the humor grows repetitive. Rio Raj’s energy and Vartika Jain’s calm presence make for an entertaining, if uneven, watch.

    Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
    Language: Tamil
    Genre: Romantic Comedy, Sci-Fi
    Director: Ramachandran Kannan
Cast: Rio Raj, Vartika Jain, Munishkanth, Chetan, Malavika Avinash

Ram And Leela opens with a fairly simple premise before taking a sharp left turn into genuinely strange territory. Ram, played by Rio Raj, is a 30 year old man who has faced fifty matrimonial rejections and is beginning to lose hope of ever finding love. His luck changes when he meets Leela, played by Vartika Jain, on a local train.

After two months of simply staring at her from across the compartment, which apparently counts as his entire wooing strategy, Leela agrees to be with him. There is just one unusual condition attached. Ram can never see her after 6 PM.

That mystery is what pulls the audience into the film, and it eventually leads somewhere genuinely unexpected. Leela’s family turns out to be Anunnaki aliens who switch gender every twelve hours, meaning that after sunset, Leela becomes a man, and the same nighttime friend Ram has been casually hanging out with turns out to be Leela the whole time.

Ram And Leela Movie Review - A Quirky Rom-Com With an Alien Twist

It is a bold, offbeat idea for a mainstream romantic comedy. While a similar gender-swap concept appeared in another film, Double Occupancy, just months earlier, Ram And Leela still manages to carve out its own identity, even if the idea itself was not entirely new.

The problem is that the film often treats this wild premise as just a setup for the next loud reaction rather than exploring it with any real depth. Ram spends much of the film in a constant state of panic, repeating words like “free” until they lose all meaning and fleeing from every big reveal like his life depends on it.

The rest of the cast tends to match that same high energy, with volume often standing in for actual humor. A few side plots, like a chaotic bride hunting montage and a prank caller subplot that gets forgotten until the very end, do not add much either.

There is even a moment explaining how aliens supposedly engineered humanity to mine gold, delivered with a straight face that makes it feel like it wandered in from an ancient astronaut conspiracy video.

Thankfully, the film picks up once the story moves to a village wedding and the alien angle fully takes over. The humor here stays fairly simple, mostly built around men slowly realizing who they have actually been falling for, but a few moments genuinely land.

Munishkanth stands out as an uncle who falls for a fellow alien that transforms right at 6 PM sharp, delivering the film’s most committed and consistently funny stretch. There is also a genuinely amusing bit involving two families arguing over whether a wedding reception can be allowed to run past sunset.

Rio Raj carries much of the film on pure energy, though his performance rarely dips below a shout, and the film’s frequent attempts at fourth-wall breaks poking fun at his own overreactions do not always land as intended.

Vartika Jain, by contrast, brings a calm, grounded presence to Leela that helps balance out the chaos around her, making their scenes together feel more genuine than the broader comedy around them. The rest of the supporting cast, including Chetan and Malavika Avinash, remain mostly functional without leaving much of an impression.

Director Ramachandran Kannan deserves real credit for attempting something different within the crowded romantic comedy space.

The film does not always sustain that freshness throughout, though, with certain subplots feeling underdeveloped and some jokes stretched well past the point they remain funny. The first half in particular takes its time setting things up, and it is only once the central twist kicks in that the story truly finds its footing.

On the technical side, the film gets decent support from its music and colorful visual style, which suits its playful, offbeat tone well. The chemistry between Rio Raj and Vartika Jain also helps keep the romantic portions grounded even when the comedy around them gets a bit too loud.

In the end, Ram And Leela is a reasonably entertaining watch, held together by a genuinely fresh core idea and a few standout comic moments, even if the execution does not always live up to the ambition of its premise.
