One Night Only Movie Review: One Wild Night, One Underdeveloped Idea

Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner bring genuine chemistry to this dystopian rom-com about a single government-approved night for premarital sex, even as the film shies away from its own boldest ideas.

One Night Only Movie Review - One Wild Night, One Underdeveloped Idea

One Night Only Movie Review: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)

One Night Only runs on a genuinely absurd premise and strong chemistry between its leads, delivering plenty of chaotic laughs even as it leaves its sharper satirical ideas largely unexplored.

    Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
    Genre: Romantic Comedy
    Runtime: 102 minutes
    Director: Will Gluck
Cast: Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Maya Hawke, Molly Ringwald

What if the government decided you could only have premarital sex on one designated night a year? That is the delightfully ridiculous premise behind One Night Only, a rom-com that fully commits to its outrageous idea and mostly gets away with it, even if it never quite lives up to everything that idea could have been.

The film follows Allie, played by Monica Barbaro, and Owen, played by Callum Turner, two strangers navigating New York City on the one night a year when premarital sex is legal.

What starts as a simple search for romance, or at the very least a memorable hookup, quickly spirals into a night full of misunderstandings, questionable decisions, and increasingly bizarre encounters. It is genuinely funny in stretches, and the film clearly knows exactly how silly its own premise is.

At times, the movie feels like it is racing to squeeze in one more joke before you have finished laughing at the last one. The constant stream of gags can occasionally feel exhausting, but more often than not, the sheer commitment to the bit wins you over.

    One Night Only Movie Review

What makes the comedy work best is how seriously everyone in this world treats something so completely absurd. Businesses prepare for the night, people plan elaborate strategies, and strangers behave as though this is just another ordinary annual event. Watching characters navigate something this bonkers with a completely straight face often lands funnier than the actual jokes.

Barbaro and Turner deserve a lot of credit for keeping the film grounded. Their easy chemistry gives the story something to hold onto beyond just a string of chaotic comic sketches. Barbaro plays Allie with a confident, warm energy, while Turner brings just the right amount of awkward bewilderment to Owen, making their scenes together feel natural even amid all the surrounding madness.

The film also has a lot of fun with its cameos, packing in appearances from Pete Davidson, Bobby Cannavale, Julia Fox, Nicholas Braun, Mike Birbiglia, and several others, along with sly visual references to other celebrities.

Most of these appearances are so quick or intentionally absurd that they never feel like the movie stopping just to show off a famous face. Instead, they become another layer of the joke, adding to the film’s chaotic, self-aware energy.

Where the film stumbles is in how little it actually explores its own premise. A world where the government regulates something as personal as intimacy is rich territory for real satire, touching on control, freedom, and bodily autonomy.

One Night Only raises these questions briefly but never really commits to answering them, choosing instead to fall back on familiar rom-com beats, mixed signals, missed chances, and a race toward a big romantic finale. The dystopian setting looks interesting on the surface, but underneath it, the story plays things fairly safe.

That choice is not necessarily a dealbreaker if you go in expecting a broad comedy rather than sharp satire, but it does make the film’s world feel thinner than its premise promises.

The pacing also occasionally suffers from the movie’s eagerness to keep the laughs coming nonstop, with some scenes feeling like they exist purely to set up another gag or cameo. At 102 minutes, the film could likely have tightened things up a bit, and a slightly shorter runtime probably would have served it better.

The supporting cast, including Maya Hawke, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton, does not get much to work with, often feeling more like quick appearances than fully developed characters. A few moments leave an impression, but overall, they are given little room to matter.

In the end, One Night Only is a film whose idea is genuinely more interesting than its execution. It is not trying to be a clever dystopian satire, and once you accept that, there is a lot of chaotic, infectious fun to be had watching two people try to find connection in a world that has turned intimacy into a bureaucratic annual event.

Some jokes land, some cameos fly by before you can process them, and some scenes feel like the filmmakers threw everything at the wall hoping enough would stick. Enough of it does. One Night Only is messy, overstuffed, and occasionally too eager to please, but its charm and energy make it an easy watch nonetheless.
