Operation Safed Sagar Review: This Kargil Series Is The Best Indian War Drama in Years

Siddharth is quietly magnificent, the aerial sequences are genuinely thrilling, and the series tells a chapter of Kargil history that most people simply did not know existed — with emotion and without jingoism.

Operation Safed Sagar Review: This Kargil Series Is The Best Indian War Drama in Years

Operation Safed Sagar Review: Operation Safed Sagar is a gripping, emotionally resonant Netflix war drama that brings the Indian Air Force’s extraordinary role in the 1999 Kargil conflict to life with exceptional performances, impressive aerial sequences, and a rare restraint that allows genuine patriotism to land without tipping into propaganda. Siddharth’s performance alone is worth the watch, and the series as a whole stands as one of the finest Indian military dramas produced in recent memory.

    Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
    Director: Oni Sen
    Platform: Netflix
    Episodes: 6
Cast: Siddharth, Jimmy Shergill, Abhay Verma, Vinay Pathak, Adil Hussain, Dia Mirza
    Release: August 7, 2026

Most people who know about the Kargil War of 1999 know it through the lens of the army — soldiers climbing impossible frozen peaks, fighting at altitudes that make every breath a struggle, taking back positions held by Pakistani intruders who had crossed the Line of Control under the cover of winter.

Films like Lakshya, LOC Kargil, and Shershah have told that story with varying degrees of success. What they never quite got to was what was happening in the sky above all of it.

Operation Safed Sagar is the story of the Indian Air Force’s Golden Arrows Squadron and what they were asked to do under near-impossible conditions.

The strict diplomatic constraint they operated under — that the IAF could not cross the Line of Control under any circumstances, because India needed to prove to the world that it was Pakistan who had violated the border — meant that pilots were flying combat missions with one hand effectively tied behind their backs.

    Operation Safed Sagar Review

The series explains this constraint clearly and makes you understand why it mattered strategically, which is one of its smartest decisions. This was not just a military operation. It was a diplomatic argument being made at thirty thousand feet.

The series opens with a jolt — a jet going down over snow-capped peaks — before stepping back four months to show how the Golden Arrows Squadron was trained and prepared by Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, played by Siddharth, brought in by Wing Commander BS Dhanoa, played by Jimmy Shergill.

This structure is a clever choice. By showing you early what is lost, the series makes every ordinary moment that follows carry weight. A birthday celebration, a pilot proposing to his girlfriend from a cockpit, a late-night meal in the mess — all of it lands differently because you already know what the war will cost.

Siddharth is exceptional. He carries the series with a warmth and philosophical calm that makes Ahuja the kind of leader you understand completely — someone who talks about every successful landing feeling like a birthday and means it absolutely. His emotional scenes are handled with remarkable restraint. When the moments hit, they hit properly, because the series has done the quiet work of making you care.

Jimmy Shergill is, as ever, utterly reliable. He plays authority without arrogance and confidence without bluster. Abhay Verma as the gifted but impatient young pilot Dhali gets one of the more developed arcs among the squadron and handles both the swagger and the vulnerability convincingly. Manu Rishi Chaddha as Pervez Musharraf is genuinely outstanding — chilling, restrained, and completely believable.

The aerial combat sequences deserve specific credit. Shot over genuinely intimidating terrain with impressive CGI work, the cockpit scenes create a real sense of danger and claustrophobia. They are tense rather than merely spectacular.

The series is not without flaws. The scenes involving American and Chinese diplomats feel cartoonish and slightly embarrassing compared to the grounded quality of the Indian and Pakistani political portrayals.

The female characters — Dia Mirza, Amrita Bagchi, Prajakta Koli — are given somewhat limited material as waiting military spouses, though all three make their scenes count within those constraints.

A perfect Independence Day watch and one of Netflix India’s best releases of 2026.

Operation Safed Sagar is now streaming on Netflix. All 6 episodes available.
