Taken: Natalee Holloway Review – 21 Years, One Mother and a Case the World Never Forgot, So Does Netflix Add Anything New?

Netflix's three-part docuseries puts Beth Holloway at the center, and her pain is the reason to watch, even if the story feels familiar.

Taken: Natalee Holloway Review: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)

Taken: Natalee Holloway is a quick, emotional docuseries driven by Beth Holloway and her daughter’s friends. Longtime followers of the case may learn little new, and some viewers will feel the focus is not always on Natalee herself.

    Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
    Genre: True Crime Docuseries
    Language: English
Directors: Dani Sloane and Matthew Galkin
    Episodes: 3
Runtime: About 35 to 45 minutes each

Few true crime cases have stayed in the public mind like the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. Now Netflix has returned to it with a three-part docuseries that arrived on 4 November 2026. It does not try to reinvent the story. Instead, it tells it through the people who lived it.

In May 2005, around 100 students from a small town in Alabama flew to Aruba to celebrate graduation. Natalee, an 18-year-old who was smart, studious, and fun with her friends, was seen talking to a young man named Joran van der Sloot that night. She went missing in the overnight hours of 30 May and never made the flight home.

The series opens with Beth Holloway reading a letter she wrote to van der Sloot. In 2023, he admitted to killing Natalee after denying it for 18 years. From there, the story moves in a straight line, from the night she vanished to the long wait for answers. Beth, Natalee’s friends, and some people in Aruba who helped her search share what they saw and felt along the way.

The strongest part is Beth herself. She spent weeks and months on the island, gave press conferences, and talked to countless reporters to keep her daughter’s name alive. Her anger at how slowly police acted and at how long van der Sloot played games still comes through in her interview.

You do not need to know the case to feel it. One critic called her determination the emotional backbone of the show, and that fits.

The friends help too. Through them, Natalee becomes more than the senior portrait the world remembers. She comes across as bright and brave, a young woman with a full life ahead of her.

The first episode also brings in Gerold Dompig, Aruba’s deputy chief of police at the time. He speaks for the first time in 20 years and defends how his team handled the investigation, including the arrests of hotel security guards after van der Sloot told a story that turned out to be false.

Some viewers may leave with a harsh view of the Aruban police. It helps to remember that policing and legal systems differ from country to country.

The pace is quick, and the mix of old news clips, home videos, and courtroom footage keeps things moving without too much drama added on top.

Not everyone will be satisfied, though. If you have followed this case for two decades, there is very little here you have not heard. A few critics also felt something was missing. They said the series sometimes feels like a mission to bring down the suspect rather than a tribute to Natalee.

Another point of complaint is the mix of real footage with dramatized scenes, which does not always work. One reviewer also raised the question of privilege and why some missing person cases get more media attention than others, which adds an uncomfortable layer to the story.

Even so, many will find it worth watching just to honor Natalee and to see the strength of a mother who refused to let the case fade away.

After a heavy watch like this, you may want something lighter. Our A Dog’s Perfect Christmas review covers a cute but flat holiday film, and our Stick Season 2 review looks at a warm comedy that feels like a cozy blanket. If you prefer true stories with a different tone, our The Greatest review covers Prime Video’s Muhammad Ali series.

Taken: Natalee Holloway may not shock you with new facts, but it reminds you of the person at the center of it all and the mother who never stopped asking questions.

Taken: Natalee Holloway is now streaming on Netflix.
