Traffic challans are issued for violating traffic rules, and sometimes the fine amount can be quite high. However, if you’ve received a challan or have been fined for breaking traffic rules, there is a way to get it reduced or even waived.

Lok Adalat: The Modern Version of a Village Panchayat

You may have heard of the Lok Adalat. It is considered the modern version of the traditional village panchayat. Lok Adalats are held from time to time across the country to resolve various issues, including traffic challans. The best part is that you don’t need to visit regular courts or hire expensive lawyers. In many cases, the fine amount is reduced, and sometimes the challan is completely waived.

    Disputes Resolved Through Mutual Agreement

In Lok Adalats, disputes between two parties are resolved through dialogue and mutual agreement. These courts were established to reduce the burden on the formal judicial system in India.

Where Are Lok Adalats Held in Delhi?

In Delhi, Lok Adalats are conducted at:

    • Dwarka Court
    • Karkardooma Court
    • Patiala House Court
    • Rohini Court
    • Rouse Avenue Court
    • Saket Court
    • Tis Hazari Court

    Types of Traffic Cases Heard

While Lok Adalats handle various types of cases, most people approach them for resolving minor traffic violations like:

    • Not wearing a seat belt
    • Riding without a helmet
    • Jumping a red light
    • Parking in the wrong place

If your vehicle is not involved in any criminal activity or serious accident, your traffic challan can be reduced or even cancelled.

No Settlement in Cases Sent to Regular Courts

If your challan has already been forwarded to a regular court, it cannot be settled in a Lok Adalat. Additionally, if an e-challan is not paid within three months, your driving license may be suspended. Non-payment of a challan may also lead to vehicle seizure, blacklisting, or even jail time.

Court Fees Are Refunded in Certain Cases

If you have an ongoing court case and request settlement in a Lok Adalat, your court fees are refunded. The decision made by the Lok Adalat is final and binding, and cannot be appealed in any other court in the country.
