Jio Platforms is now a listed company, and for the first time, ordinary investors can compare India’s two biggest telecom companies side by side on the stock market. Price-to-earnings ratios and EV/EBITDA multiples are hard to follow for most people. A simpler question tells a lot more: how much is the market paying for each mobile customer of Jio and Bharti Airtel?
Here is a plain comparison based on market value, subscribers and average revenue per user.
Jio vs Airtel: The Basic Numbers
| Metric | Jio Platforms | Bharti Airtel |
|---|---|---|
| Market value | Rs [FILL: Jio market cap on date] lakh crore | Rs [FILL: Airtel market cap on date] lakh crore |
| Mobile subscribers in India | About 51 crore | About 49 crore |
| Market share (wireless) | 39.31% | 38.01% |
| ARPU (Q2 FY27 estimate) | About Rs 218 | About Rs 267 |
Subscriber figures are based on TRAI’s August 2026 data, which shows Jio as the market leader with over 50 crore wireless users. ARPU, or average revenue per user, is the amount a telecom company earns from each customer every month.
What the Market Pays for Each Customer
At its IPO price of Rs 1,119, Jio Platforms was valued at about Rs 10.3 lakh crore. With around 51 crore subscribers, that works out to about Rs 20,200 for every Jio customer. At its listing price, the figure is around Rs [FILL] per customer.
Bharti Airtel, valued at around Rs 11.1 lakh crore earlier this month, comes to about Rs 22,500 per Indian mobile customer on the same simple basis. Airtel’s market value also includes its Africa business, home broadband, DTH and enterprise arms, so the real value it puts on each Indian mobile user is lower than this figure.
| Value per subscriber | Jio | Airtel |
|---|---|---|
| At IPO price / early October | About Rs 20,200 | About Rs 22,500 |
| On [FILL: date] | About Rs [FILL] | About Rs [FILL] |
The Better Measure: Months of Revenue
A customer who pays more is worth more, so the value per subscriber should be seen next to ARPU. Dividing the value per customer by the monthly ARPU shows how many months of revenue the market is paying for.
| Company | Value per subscriber | Monthly ARPU | Months of revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio (IPO price) | About Rs 20,200 | About Rs 218 | About 93 months |
| Airtel (early October) | About Rs 22,500 | About Rs 267 | About 84 months |
| Jio (on [FILL: date]) | About Rs [FILL] | About Rs 218 | About [FILL] months |
On this measure, Jio looks more expensive than Airtel. Even at the IPO price, investors were paying for around 93 months of Jio’s revenue per customer, against about 84 months for Airtel. Any listing gain stretches this gap further.
Why Investors Are Still Paying More for Jio
There are clear reasons behind Jio’s higher value. Jio has the largest subscriber base and keeps adding users faster than its rivals. Its ARPU is lower than Airtel’s, which leaves more room for growth when tariffs rise. Jio also owns a large home broadband business through JioFiber and AirFiber, along with its digital and enterprise services, which are not fully captured in mobile ARPU.
The IPO money also helps. Jio is using about Rs 27,500 crore from the issue to prepay borrowings of its telecom arm, Reliance Jio Infocomm, which will cut its interest costs and improve profits in the coming quarters.
Where Airtel Scores

Airtel earns more from each customer, with an ARPU about Rs 49 higher than Jio’s. It has a strong base of premium and postpaid users, and its market value already includes a large overseas business. For investors looking for higher revenue per customer, Airtel offers more today. Jio’s value depends more on growth in the coming years.
What It Means for Investors
The per-subscriber view shows that the market has already priced in a lot of growth for Jio. For Jio’s valuation to look reasonable, its ARPU will need to rise steadily through tariff hikes and more premium users. The next big triggers will be Jio’s first quarterly results as a listed company and any tariff increase across the industry.
