Boost Your Immunity Against COVID-19 With Ayurvedic Methods

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) released an advisory that provides ayurvedic methods that can boost one’s immunity. These health measures are derived from Ayurveda’s preventive care concepts of ‘Dinacharya’.

These are daily regimes whereas seasonal regimes are called ‘Ritucharya’. These two concepts are extremely important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to boost immunity which is soo important these days.

However, the release recommends that maintaining your hygiene is the best preventive measure anyone can take against infections of all sorts. Everyone must wash their hands, avoid crowded places, cover their mouth while coughing, use sanitizers, and more.

    PIB advisory

    • Drinking warm water
    • Practicing Yogasana, meditation, and Pranayama for around 30 minutes daily
    • Including spices like cumin, coriander, garlic and turmeric in your cooking

    Ayurvedic measures

    • Taking 10gm or 1 teaspoon of Chyawanprash in the morning. Those who have diabetes should take the sugar-free version. “Strong immunity is necessary to fight any kind of foreign body or disease.
    • Eating a tablespoonful of Chyawanprash daily enhances the immunity, specifically that of lungs and respiratory system”, adds Dr. Chauhan.
    • Drinking herbal tea or kadha that’s made from cardamom, black pepper, basil, dry ginger, and raisin. This can be done once or twice a day.
    • Feel free to add lemon juice or jaggery to adjust the taste to your liking.
    • Mixing half a teaspoon of turmeric powder in 150ml of milk makes a drink called ‘Golden Milk’. Drink this concoction once or twice a day.

Dr. Chauhan also says that good digestion plays an important role in fighting diseases. To help with this, drinking ginger tea, fennel tea, cinnamon tea or even eating a piece of fresh ginger is good.

The recipe can be found below:

    1. Boil a liter of water
    2. Add a teaspoon each of cumin, coriander powder, fennel, and freshly grated ginger
    3. After about four to five minutes, filter the liquid into a thermos, and drink it during the day.

If these are too advanced for you, here are some simple procedures everyone should try to incorporate:

    • This first ayurvedic method is called Nasal Application. Apply some ghee or coconut oil in your nostrils in the morning and evening.

Dr. Chauhan says that “Putting two-three drops of sesame oil in each nostril and sniffing it in will not only lubricate the nasal passage and throat but also strengthen the inner mucus membrane to keep away foreign bodies”.

    • Oil pulling therapy is another simple and popular method. For this, you just have to take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and swish it around in your mouth for a few minutes.

Make sure not to swallow it. Spit the liquid out and rinse your mouth with warm water. You can do this twice a day.

If you have a dry cough or a sore throat, the PIB advisory list has got you covered.

    • Mix jaggery or honey with clove powder. This can be taken a few times a day in case of throat irritation or a dry cough.
    • Steam inhalation with caraway seeds or mint leaves can be done once a day as well.

These generally treat the symptoms. However, if they persist for long, it is a good measure to consult your doctors for further treatment.
