Speaking up against someone powerful rarely comes without a cost, and that’s exactly the battle at the centre of Hunkkaar: The Roar. JioHotstar dropped the trailer for the upcoming series on Thursday, and it wastes no time throwing its lead character straight into a fight that’s as much about surviving public judgment as it is about seeking justice.
What’s the trailer showing?
The trailer opens with Aneet Padda’s character, Meenu Rawat, at a police station, filing a complaint against a revered spiritual guru known as Baapji, played by Raghubir Yadav, accusing him of sexually assaulting her.
What follows isn’t a straightforward path toward justice, though. Almost immediately, Meenu finds herself under intense scrutiny, questioned and judged by the very people around her, including her own father, simply because her behaviour doesn’t match what society expects a victim to look or act like.
That’s really the emotional core the trailer leans into. Meenu isn’t just fighting an accusation against a powerful man; she’s fighting the assumptions people make about how a victim is “supposed” to behave and refusing to shrink herself just to be believed.
Investigating from the other side is ACP Jasleen Singh Soni, played by Fatima Sana Shaikh, who takes on the job of uncovering the truth behind Meenu’s allegations and, by extension, taking on Baapji’s considerable influence herself.
Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub plays a defense lawyer described as essentially the only person in the country who fully believes Meenu, while Ram Kapoor plays Baapji’s lawyer and Arjun Mathur portrays a journalist covering the unfolding case.
Announcing the trailer on Instagram, Aneet Padda captioned her post with a line roughly translating to, when a girl’s voice collides with society’s blind devotion, who actually wins? It’s a fitting summary of the tension the show seems built around.
Interestingly, Aneet shot for Hunkkaar before becoming a household name through her romantic musical drama Saiyaara alongside Ahaan Panday, which makes this trailer a genuinely early look at a very different, far more intense side of her range.

Who’s Behind the Series
Hunkkaar is directed by Karan D. Kapadia, Nitya Mehra, and Heeraz Marfatia and also features Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub and Zoya Hussain in key roles. The series is produced by Birla Studios and Applause Entertainment, in association with Purple Pebble Pictures, a Mangata Films production. Priyanka Chopra Jonas serves as executive producer on the project.
Speaking about why she chose to back this particular story, Priyanka said she’s always wanted to stand behind narratives that have something genuinely important to say, and that Hunkkaar fits squarely into that. She also spoke highly of Nitya Mehra and Karan D. Kapadia as filmmakers and expressed real pride in what the entire cast and crew managed to put together.
Why This One Feels Different
What makes Hunkkaar stand out from a typical crime drama is how directly it confronts the social backlash that often follows someone speaking out against a powerful figure.
Rather than treating Meenu’s accusation as the end point of the story, the trailer positions it as the beginning of an entirely different battle, one against public opinion, family doubt, and institutional protection surrounding a man with genuine influence.
Should You Watch It?
If you’re drawn to shows that tackle difficult, socially relevant themes without softening them for comfort, Hunkkaar looks like it’s aiming squarely at that space.
With a genuinely strong cast and a story built around uncomfortable questions rather than easy answers, it’s shaping up to be one of the more talked-about releases this September.
