The Shards Review: Ryan Murphy Takes On Bret Easton Ellis — and the Result Is Hypnotic, Flawed, and Impossible to Look Away From

Neon-soaked 1981 Beverly Hills, a serial killer nobody can identify, an unreliable narrator nobody can fully trust, and Igby Rigney delivering one of television's best performances of the year.

    The Shards Review: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

The Shards is a visually stunning and deeply unsettling psychological thriller that marks one of Ryan Murphy’s most ambitious and successful FX adaptations — anchored by Igby Rigney’s quietly extraordinary performance as a teenager whose paranoia, desire, and guilt blur together until neither he nor the audience can separate what is real from what he has constructed.

It will not satisfy viewers expecting a conventional serial killer thriller, but for those willing to surrender to its atmosphere and moral ambiguity, it is one of the year’s most compelling new series.

    Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
    Network: JioHotstar
    Episodes: 9
    Language: English
Cast: Igby Rigney, Homer Gere, Kaia Gerber, Hayes Warner, Wes Bentley, Evan Rachel Wood
    Premiere: August 6, 2026

Ryan Murphy makes television the way nobody else does — loudly, visually, and with a complete unwillingness to understate anything. He is not interested in restraint. Whether that works for or against a project depends almost entirely on whether the material can support his instincts.

With The Shards, adapted from Bret Easton Ellis’ 2023 novel, the answer is complicated and fascinating in roughly equal measure.

The series is set in 1981 Los Angeles, specifically in the privileged, drug-fogged world of an elite Beverly Hills prep school. Bret, played by Igby Rigney, is a senior on the surface of things — dating the right girl, running with the right crowd, maintaining the careful performance of someone who fits perfectly into the world he inhabits.

Beneath that surface, he is hiding his sexuality, working on a novel, and increasingly consumed by suspicion about Robert Mallory, a handsome and quietly unsettling transfer student played by Homer Gere who has slipped into their social circle.

The Shards Review - Visually Stunning Psychological Thriller

Simultaneously, the neighbourhood is being terrorised by a serial killer known as The Trawler, targeting teenagers. Bret becomes convinced that Robert is connected to the murders. Whether he is right depends on how much you trust a narrator who has good reasons to be unreliable.

Igby Rigney is the reason this works as well as it does. His Bret is a performance of extraordinary layering — paranoid but not hysterical, observant but not trustworthy, sympathetic but morally complicated. He carries the weight of the narration across all nine episodes without ever letting the performance feel effortful, which is the hardest trick in this kind of material.

Homer Gere as Robert Mallory understands intuitively that the character’s power comes entirely from what is not said — every quiet glance and measured response creating just enough discomfort to sustain the mystery. Evan Rachel Wood and Wes Bentley add texture in supporting roles, and Kaia Gerber is more effective than her limited prior screen work suggested she could be.

Murphy’s directorial instincts — the neon cinematography, the immaculate period production design, the carefully curated soundtrack — create an 1981 Los Angeles that is simultaneously seductive and deeply wrong. Every frame feels composed for maximum aesthetic effect, which is both the series’ greatest visual strength and its occasional storytelling weakness.

There are moments where the atmosphere is so carefully assembled that it starts to crowd out the psychological complexity that made Ellis’ novel so memorable. The serial killer plot, when it dominates, pulls the show toward more conventional Murphy territory. The character scenes, when they are given room, are far more interesting.

The Shards is not a fast thriller built on weekly revelations. It is a slow, atmospheric meditation on memory, desire, paranoia, and the stories people construct about themselves. Those willing to meet it on those terms will find something genuinely special.

The Shards premieres August 6 on JioHotstar. New episodes drop Wednesdays through September 9.
