Rudravanam PS Review: A Headless Body, a Missing MLA’s Brother, and One Honest Cop, So Does the Mystery Hold Till the End?

Naresh Agastya carries this ZEE5 cop thriller with a solid performance, but a messy middle takes the edge off a promising start.

    Rudravanam PS Review: ★★½☆☆ (2.5/5)

Rudravanam PS opens with a gripping mystery and a fine lead performance. After the third episode, too many characters and loose subplots make it a fairly ordinary crime thriller.

    Rating: ★★½☆☆ (2.5/5)
    Genre: Crime Thriller
    Language: Telugu
    Director: Sasidhar Munnangi
Cast: Naresh Agastya, Banerjee, Shravani Reddy, Preeti Sundar, Shiva Alapati
    Episodes: 7

A small town, a police station, and a pile of strange crimes. Telugu viewers have seen this setup many times. Rudravanam PS tries to stand out by throwing three cases at its hero at once. The seven-episode series is streaming on ZEE5, and it carries a U/A 16+ rating.

Naresh Agastya plays Shiva Kumar, a sub-inspector at the Rudravanam police station. He is honest, and that is not always an easy thing to be in his line of work. Soon after the story begins, a person goes missing, and in some tellings, he is the brother of a local MLA.

Then a headless body turns up, and nobody can tell who it is. At the same time, a gold robbery lands on the police desk. Shiva takes charge and starts checking every piece of evidence. Before long, he spots odd links between the cases.

Pressure begins to build from powerful locals, and his senior officer, CI Venugopal, played by Banerjee, is not always on his side. The case slowly turns into a fight that gets personal.

The first two or three episodes work well. The headless body scene creates real tension, and you immediately want to know who the victim is and how the missing man fits in. Director Sasidhar Munnangi sets up the mystery with care, and the small-town police station feels believable. The pressure between officers and the trouble faced by an honest cop also give the story some extra weight.

Naresh Agastya is the biggest reason to watch. He plays Shiva with natural seriousness, and his investigation scenes are the best part of the series. He does not look like a hero who wins every round. He looks like a man who simply refuses to step back, even when his bosses push him.

Banerjee does a steady job as the senior cop, and Shravani Reddy is neat in her part. Raja Ravindra also leaves a mark as an MLA in a very short role.

The rest of the supporting cast is a mixed bag. Several performances feel fairly ordinary, and a few newcomers add freshness but lack the polish the story needed.

Sadly, the series cannot keep up that early energy. After the third episode, more characters and side plots crowd in, and the main investigation takes a back seat. The way clues from one case lead to another should be exciting, but it gets confusing instead.

Some scenes end too quickly, while others drag without much reason. A character named Anji is important to the plot, yet he is never used well. There was a real chance to build suspense through his clashes with the police, and the makers missed it.

The twists are another problem. A good crime thriller keeps you guessing until the culprit is revealed, but here you can predict several key moments in advance. The final twist has some merit, though it comes too late to win back the interest that faded in the middle.

The series also touches on corruption, political pressure, and the games of powerful people, but it never goes deep enough. More focus on the fights within the police force would have helped too.

On the technical side, there is some good news. Ashkar Ali’s cinematography captures the small-town mood well, and Saluri Vasurao’s background score adds suspense to the investigation scenes. The writing by Taj Syed has interesting ideas, but they do not turn into a strong screenplay.

If you want more on the watchlist, our Dead-End Job review covers a Korean horror series where every night shift could be deadly. For a smarter puzzle, try our Collision Course review, which looks at a Spanish heist thriller that replays one crash in many ways. And if you like your action with more blood, our Cult movie review talks about a slasher thriller with plenty of fire.

Rudravanam PS begins with a good mystery but cannot hold the same suspense to the end. If you enjoy simple police investigation stories, you can give it a try. If you want a sharp, strong crime thriller, you may feel let down.

Rudravanam PS is now streaming on ZEE5.
