Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has made strong statements about the Indus Water Treaty, warning India not to block or reduce Pakistan’s share of water. Speaking on 13 August 2025, he said that India “cannot snatch even a single drop” of Pakistan’s water. He also warned that any attempt to stop the flow would be seen as an act of war.

The remarks came after India suspended the Indus Water Treaty following the April Pahalgam terror attack. The treaty, signed in 1960, is an agreement between India and Pakistan on sharing the waters of the Indus River and its tributaries.

At a ceremony in Islamabad, PM Sharif said that Pakistan will never compromise on its water rights. He warned that if India tried to block the water, Pakistan would respond strongly, even hinting at military action.

The Prime Minister also referred to Pakistan’s nuclear capability, suggesting it could act as a deterrent. He echoed the words of Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, who has also issued strong warnings. General Munir said that any cut in water supply would lead to the destruction of Indian infrastructure, and hinted at a nuclear response by saying, “If we think we are going down, we’ll take half the world down with us.”

These statements show the serious tensions between the two countries. The Indus Water Treaty has survived past conflicts, but this latest dispute has raised fears of a bigger crisis in the region.
