Some thrillers open with a body. This one opens with a voice on the phone, and honestly, that might be scarier. Last Seen, Apple TV’s newest original series, drops its first two episodes on Wednesday, September 9.
From there, the show settles into a weekly rhythm, with one new episode landing every Wednesday until the season wraps up on October 7. Six episodes in total, no rushed binge, just a slow weekly build that seems designed to keep you thinking about it between episodes.
So What’s the Story Here?
At the centre of it all is Ian Ridley, played by Patrick Brammall. Eleven years ago, Ian was a police detective with a young daughter named Maggie. Then Maggie vanished without a trace, and Ian’s entire life fell apart around that one unresolved loss. He’s since stepped away from detective work and now spends his days as a police dispatcher, still holding onto the belief that his daughter might be out there somewhere.
Then the call comes in. A teenage girl, clearly distressed, is on the other end of the line, and Ian becomes convinced it’s Maggie. What follows is not a calm, procedural investigation. It’s a man who has spent over a decade refusing to give up, now getting the one piece of evidence he needed to go all in, no matter what it costs him or his family.
Apple is billing it as a thriller with a strong mystery at its core, and the premise alone does much of the heavy lifting. There’s something deeply unsettling about a story that hinges entirely on one phone call and the impossible hope it creates.
The Cast Rounding It Out
Brammall carries the lead role, but a solid ensemble surrounds him. Brendan Cowell plays Henry Reid, Maxine Peake takes on Jenna Reid, and Daniel Henshall plays Donald Reid. Jessica Wren appears as Debbie McGuire, Zahra Newman plays Isabel, known as Izzy, Pena, and newcomer Chloe Jean Lourdes steps into the role of Sarah Reid. Tobias Muhafidin rounds out the principal cast as Dean Ridley.
It’s a mix of familiar faces and fresh ones. Brammall himself is known for Colin from Accounts and The Twelve, Peake has Black Mirror and Say Nothing on her resume, and Cowell recently appeared in Dune: Prophecy. That kind of range across the cast suggests the show is aiming for something with real dramatic weight, not just a straightforward missing persons chase.
Where the Story Actually Comes From
Last Seen is based on Ryan David Jahn’s 2011 novel The Dispatcher, though the show takes some creative liberties. In the book, the lead character is named Ian Hunt, and the story unfolds in Bulls Mouth, Texas, eventually stretching into a cross-country chase toward California.
The series swaps that setting for Australia, renames the character Ian Ridley, and reshapes several details while keeping the emotional core intact: a father, a phone call, and the desperate hope that his missing daughter might still be alive.
Kris Mrksa handled the television adaptation and serves as an executive producer, while Christian Schwochow directs and also produces. The series comes from 60Forty Films and Werner Film Productions, with Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Mrksa, Schwochow, and Joanna Werner all credited as executive producers.
