Ali Baba Aur 40 Bhoot is not the Ali Baba story you grew up with, and that is exactly the point. JioHotstar’s new Hotstar Specials series takes the familiar Arabian Nights tale and strips out the forty thieves entirely, replacing them with forty restless ghosts instead. It premieres on September 11, and the concept alone has already got people curious.
A Familiar Story, Reimagined
The series centres on Alisha, known as Ali Nigam, played by Asha Negi, a neuropsychology expert who is searching for her missing father. Her search eventually leads her to Baba, played by Vishal Vashishtha, the police officer assigned to her case. What starts as a fairly grounded investigation quickly takes a sharp turn when the two of them end up pulled into the paranormal world, where they must investigate forty restless spirits, the bhoot of the title, all connected in some way to Ali’s father’s disappearance.
It is an interesting mash-up. You get the structure of a formal missing person investigation, layered with supernatural elements and folklore, which gives the show a chance to feel both grounded and eerie at the same time. That blend of genres is a big part of why the show has generated so much early buzz, since it takes a story most people already know and gives it a shape nobody has really seen before.
The Cast Bringing It to Life
Asha Negi and Vishal Vashishtha lead the show as Ali and Baba, and both actors bring solid television experience to roles that clearly ask for a mix of investigative seriousness and genre thrills. Backing them up is a strong supporting cast, including Shane Nigam, Abhay Mahajan, Joy Sengupta and Mridul Das, all rounding out the ensemble.
JioHotstar first announced the project back in July with a teaser that leaned fully into its tone, accompanied by the cheeky line, ghosting toh normal tha, yeh toh paranormal ho gaya. The teaser itself opened with a nighttime walk through a forest, flashlight beams cutting through the dark, setting up the horror-adjacent mood the show seems to be going for. According to reports, the series was also shot at real locations, which producers are hoping will add an extra layer of authenticity to the horror elements once the show is out.
Why the Buzz Makes Sense
What makes Ali Baba Aur 40 Bhoot stand out is how it treats a classic story as a starting point rather than something to simply retell. Instead of thieves guarding stolen treasure, you get a father’s disappearance tangled up with forty ghosts who all seem to have their own piece of the puzzle. That gives the writers room to build mystery, emotional stakes, and a fair bit of horror and comedy into a format audiences already recognise on some level, without it feeling like a rehash.
The show is being produced by Dejavu Arts, and while plot details have mostly stayed under wraps ahead of release, the combination of a missing persons case, a neuropsychologist lead, a police officer with his own investigation to run, and forty ghosts tied to a single family mystery gives the series plenty to work with across its run.

Go in expecting a genre blend rather than a straight horror show. There is investigation, there is folklore, and there is clearly going to be a fair amount of supernatural mystery woven through the story as Ali and Baba try to figure out what actually happened to her father. With a strong cast, a fresh angle on a story everyone already half knows, and a premise built for both scares and intrigue, Ali Baba Aur 40 Bhoot looks like one of the more original streaming premieres this September.
