There is a rare black fungus affecting people who are suffering from COVID-19. The first case that was reported was from the Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi after that few more case has been reported from all around the country. So now the biggest question is, what is that black fungus?
Mucormycosis is a serious but rare fungal infection caused by a group of molds called mucormycetes. These molds live throughout the environment. Mucormycosis mainly affects people who have existing health problems that have weakened their immune system or take medicines that lower the body’s ability to fight germs and sickness.
So now the next question is is it somehow linked to Covid 19? The answer is no. It is not directly linked to COVID 19. The people who are suffering from Covid 19 undergoes a treatment that includes various type of antibiotic and some of them have the ability to further reduce the strength of the person’s immune system to fight against any kind of infection. Thus, it may lead to the cause of mucurmycosis. It is not a contagious fungal infection.

How does it affect the body of the infected person?
It can affect any part of the body.
It can cause loss of vision if it enters through the sinuses as it paralyzes the pupil muscles in the eyes which leads to complete loss of vision.
It can also cause meningitis if spread through the brain.
It can enter a body through a cut, an injury, or a burn, it is called cutaneous mucormycosis. If it enters the body through the skin than it’s symptoms are:
-Swelling around the wound.
-Blisters
-Blackening of a portion of skin
-Excessive redness
If it has been inhaled thus it directly affects the lungs it is called Pulmonary (lung) mucormycosis and its symptoms are:
-Chest pains
-Shortness of breath
-Fever
-Cough

If it has been entered through the sinuses it is called rhinocerebral (sinus and brain) mucormycosis. The symptoms of it are:
-Headache
-Nasal or sinus congestion
-Fever
-Black lesion on nasal bridge or upper inside mouth
-One-sided facial swelling
Mucormycosis is also known as black fungus, if not diagnosed early can cause a loss of vision, loss of jaw to in extreme case a death.
