New Epidemic Starts in China 5 Years After COVID, Targeting Children and the Elderly – Is It Really True?

Category-

Even five years after COVID, the fear of the pandemic still occasionally resurfaces. Recently, there has been a surge of discussions on social media about another epidemic. Claims are being made on the X platform that hospitals in China are overcrowded, long lines are forming for last rites, and multiple viruses are spreading simultaneously. Among them, Influenza A is prevalent, along with Mycoplasma pneumonia, and a new mysterious virus, hMPV (Human Metapneumovirus), is getting the most attention. People on social media suggest that China is hiding the damage caused by this virus and not revealing the true extent of the situation.

In cold weather, the risk of infections increases everywhere. A report by TOI mentions that the number of patients suffering from respiratory infections in China has certainly increased. However, neither the Chinese government nor the World Health Organization has made an official statement about it yet. Therefore, it cannot be definitively stated whether there is an actual epidemic in China or if it’s just a baseless claim.

Respiratory diseases pose a greater risk during the cold months, especially for children and the elderly. This is because children have not developed immunity fully, and elderly individuals experience a decline in their immunity. Those with pre-existing conditions like asthma or COPD are at a higher risk during the cold season.

So, is there really an epidemic? The question remains: is there truly an epidemic in China?

Some users on X have shared videos showing hospitals filled with patients, claiming that a new virus has emerged in China. However, the authenticity of these videos remains unverified, and only an investigation will reveal when they were filmed. If it were truly an epidemic, the World Health Organization would have certainly issued a statement.

That being said, flu and hMPV outbreaks are common in colder months. Currently, there is a rise in hMPV cases in China, but it’s important to note that hMPV is not a new virus. It was identified back in 2001, though social media is referring to it as a new virus. Therefore, it cannot be definitively concluded that a new epidemic has emerged in China.
