Disney+ Hotstar, a prominent broadcasting platform, has recently announced a significant development in its sports streaming offerings. Starting from December 2, 2023, the platform will provide free streaming access to the upcoming season of the Pro Kabaddi League for mobile users across India. This move is a testament to the immense popularity of kabaddi, which is the second most-watched sport in the country after cricket.
Disney+ Hotstar’s decision to offer free streaming of the Pro Kabaddi League season follows the platform’s triumphant ventures into cricket tournaments, such as the Asia Cup and the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup.
During one of the league matches of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, featuring India and South Africa, the platform witnessed an astonishing peak concurrency of 4.4 crore viewers, highlighting the massive appeal of cricket in India.
The introduction of ad-supported free streaming for the tenth season of the Pro Kabaddi League is strategically aligned with the platform’s earlier successes in cricket.
This season of the Pro Kabaddi League is scheduled to be conducted in a unique 12-city caravan format, featuring 12 competing teams. It’s clear that Disney+ Hotstar is leveraging the viewership trends it has observed in cricket to expand its offerings to other sports, recognizing the growing interest in kabaddi and making it more accessible to a wider audience. This move is likely to further cement the platform’s position as a leading provider of sports content in India.
