Noida International Airport Begins Passenger Flights; First IndiGo Service Arrives From Lucknow

After years of construction, planning, and anticipation, Noida International Airport finally welcomed its first scheduled passenger flight on June 15, 2026. The moment marks a genuinely significant milestone for Uttar Pradesh and the wider National Capital Region — one of India’s most ambitious aviation infrastructure projects has officially become operational.

The honor of the first flight went to IndiGo, arriving from Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport. Shortly after, the airport recorded its first commercial departure as well, with another IndiGo flight heading back to Lucknow.

Historic Beginning for Jewar Airport

Noida International Airport, more commonly known as Jewar Airport, has been positioned as one of the largest greenfield aviation projects in India, with expectations that it will reshape air connectivity across the north of the country.

The inaugural flight — IndiGo 6E 2278 — departed Lucknow at around 7:12 a.m. and touched down at Jewar at approximately 7:58 a.m. That landing officially marked the start of scheduled passenger operations at the airport.

First Passengers Included Jewar Villagers

There was a meaningful symbolic element to the first flight. Several passengers on board were villagers from the Jewar region whose land had been acquired during the airport’s initial development phase — a gesture that tied the project’s origins directly to the people who made it possible.

Boost for NCR and Western Uttar Pradesh

With Jewar now operational, Delhi-NCR joins a relatively small group of global metropolitan regions served by more than one commercial airport. That’s a significant shift for a region where Indira Gandhi International Airport has long carried the bulk of passenger traffic.

Officials expect the new airport to improve connectivity for residents across Greater Noida, Noida, Ghaziabad, and western Uttar Pradesh more broadly, while also supporting tourism, logistics, and business travel in the area.

Lucknow Becomes First Destination on Network

Lucknow has the distinction of being the first city connected to Jewar’s commercial network, and IndiGo has identified it as the starting point for what it plans as a broader expansion of routes from the airport.

The new connection has cut travel time between Lucknow and Noida down to roughly 30 minutes by air — a substantial improvement over road or rail options for travelers moving between the two cities.

IndiGo Leads Airport Launch Operations

IndiGo becomes the first airline to operate scheduled services from Jewar, having already opened bookings for several routes as part of its phased rollout strategy. The airline is expected to gradually expand its presence at the airport, connecting it to multiple domestic destinations over time and playing a central role in establishing Jewar as a major aviation hub for northern India.

Airport Designed as Multimodal Transport Hub
