Vishwak Sen’s Cult hit theatres on Friday, October 30, and it is unlike anything the young Telugu star has done before. Directed by Vishwak Sen himself, the film is being sold as a full-on slasher thriller, with a deadly survival game, a masked killer and a lot of blood. But does it deliver the thrills it promises? Early reviews from critics and audiences are clearly divided.
Here is the complete Cult movie review, covering the story, performances, what works, what does not and whether it is worth watching in theatres.

Cult Story: What Is the Film About?
Vishwak Sen plays DSP Sankalp Nayak, a tough, no-nonsense police officer who gets transferred to Goa, where he starts cracking down on people troubling tourists. At the same time, a group of college friends heads to an exclusive underground party at an isolated estate. The party is thrown by the son of a powerful minister, but the night quickly turns into a nightmare.
A mysterious masked “Game Master” locks more than 300 guests inside the venue, which has been rigged with explosives, and forces them to play a deadly survival game. Anyone who refuses to follow the rules is killed. Sankalp finds his way into the chaos and races against time to save the guests and unmask the killer. The rest of the film follows this fight for survival.
What Works in Cult
Vishwak Sen’s Screen Presence
The one thing almost every review agrees on is Vishwak Sen himself. As DSP Sankalp, he brings intensity, swagger and a strong physical presence to the role. His action scenes are raw and hard-hitting, and he carries the film on his shoulders whenever he is on screen. Many viewers on social media have praised him for taking a risk with a genre that Telugu cinema rarely attempts.
Ravi Basrur’s Background Score
Ravi Basrur, known for his work on the KGF films, delivers a loud, energetic background score that lifts the action sequences and adds tension to several key moments. It is easily one of the film’s biggest strengths.
The Final Act
The last stretch of the film, where the trapped guests finally fight back, has been called the most engaging part. The action picks up, the pace improves and the film finally starts to feel like the slasher thriller its trailer promised. The emotional backstory behind the villain is also handled decently.
Production Design and Action
The party venue and its deadly setup look impressive on screen, and the cinematography handles the large-scale action well. Tarak Ponnappa also gets a few moments of humour that offer a break from the violence.
What Does Not Work in Cult
Weak Tension Despite the Gore
For a film built around a deadly game, Cult does not create as much suspense as it should. The violence is extreme, and the film has an adult rating for a reason, but blood alone does not create fear. Several critics felt the survival games were not clever or exciting enough, and some pointed out clear similarities to Squid Game.
Slow First Half
The film takes time to get going, especially before Vishwak Sen’s character fully enters the main story. The post-interval portion also dips before the climax picks things up again. At 2 hours 32 minutes, the film could have been tighter, and editing has been one of the most criticised areas.
Thin Story and Characters
Beyond the lead, most characters do not get much to do. Strong actors like Murali Sharma and Srikanth Iyengar have limited scope, and the friends trapped at the party feel more like plot devices than real people. Some viewers also felt the film slips into a routine hero-versus-villains action film in the second half, instead of staying a true slasher.
Cult Movie Review: What Critics Say
| Publication | Rating | Verdict in short |
|---|---|---|
| 123Telugu | 2.75/5 | An okay survival thriller with a strong final act |
| 10TV Telugu | 1.25/5 | Too much violence, too little story |
Audience reactions on X have been more mixed than the critics. Some viewers called it a bold, must-watch slasher and one of the most violent Telugu films in recent years. Others found the first half weak and felt the film did not live up to its marketing.
Cult Public Review: Audience Reactions
- Fans praised Vishwak Sen’s acting and direction, calling the film a brave experiment.
- The action scenes and the background score were among the most praised elements.
- Several viewers said the first half was engaging but the second half was average.
- Some called it directionless but still fun to watch in a theatre.
- A few viewers felt the film turns into a typical commercial action movie in its second half.
Should You Watch Cult?
Cult is a film for a specific audience. Viewers who enjoy dark, violent action thrillers and are fans of Vishwak Sen will find enough to enjoy, especially in the final act and the action scenes. The background score and Vishwak Sen’s performance make it worth a theatre watch for them.
Families and viewers who are uncomfortable with heavy violence should stay away, as the film carries an A certificate for a reason. Those expecting a smart, edge-of-the-seat survival thriller like the best of the genre may come away disappointed by the weak tension and slow pacing.
Cult Review Verdict
Cult is a bold and ambitious attempt to bring a true slasher thriller to Telugu cinema, and Vishwak Sen deserves credit for trying something different both as an actor and as a director. His screen presence, Ravi Basrur’s music and a strong final act keep the film watchable. But weak tension, slow stretches and a thin story stop it from becoming the edge-of-the-seat experience it wants to be. Based on critic ratings so far, Cult stands at an average of around 2 out of 5, making it a one-time watch for fans of the genre.
