Malayalam superstars Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s film Lucifer 2: Empuraan was released in theatres on March 27. After the massive success of the first part, Lucifer, the craze for Empuraan among the audience was extremely high. Fans were excited to see their favorite stars, Mohanlal and Prithviraj, on the big screen. Now, the film has officially become the biggest-ever movie in the Malayalam film industry, achieving a phenomenal box office collection on its opening day.
Empuraan Breaks Records on Day 1 with a Massive Collection
According to Sacnilk, Empuraan has registered the highest opening in Malayalam cinema history. The film, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, collected ₹22 crores on its first day. Although these numbers are yet to be finalized, Empuraan has already shattered all previous opening-day records in the Malayalam film industry. The movie performed exceptionally well in Kerala, though its reception in North India was relatively subdued.
In the Malayalam language alone, Empuraan earned ₹19.45 crores, a record-breaking achievement never before seen in the industry. Previously, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Aadujeevitham – The Goat Life held the record for the highest first-day collection in Malayalam cinema, with ₹7.6 crores. Now, once again, a film directed by Prithviraj has set a new benchmark at the box office.
With its grand scale and as a sequel to Lucifer, Empuraan has received positive feedback from the audience. Despite being released on a weekday, the film is enjoying a strong response from viewers.

Mohanlal’s Star Power and Prithviraj’s Direction Elevate Empuraan’s Success
When Lucifer was released in 2019, it impressed audiences with its gripping storyline and remarkable presentation. Prithviraj Sukumaran’s direction and the way he portrayed Mohanlal’s character on the big screen heightened fans’ excitement. Mohanlal is a legendary name in South Indian cinema, and his presence contributed significantly to Lucifer’s success.
Now, Empuraan is following the same path, and expectations are high for it to become a massive hit at the box office. However, one challenge for Empuraan in the northern market could be Salman Khan’s upcoming film Sikandar, which might affect its performance outside Kerala.
