Tamil cinema has a long history of old-school romance — the kind that doesn’t rush, doesn’t overexplain, and trusts its audience to feel something quietly.
Idhayam Murali looks like it belongs firmly in that tradition.
The film stars Atharvaa in the lead role and releases in theatres on July 10, 2026. With Fahadh Faasil making a standout cameo, Thaman S handling the music and stepping in front of the camera for the first time in 22 years, and a story built around one of cinema’s most universally relatable emotions — unrequited love — this is one of the more anticipated Tamil releases of the month.
Idhayam Murali – The Title and What It Means
The film’s name carries personal weight before the story even begins.
Idhayam Murali is named in honour of Atharvaa’s late father, the legendary Tamil actor Murali, who starred in the 1991 film Idhayam. The title places that legacy right at the centre of the project — though Atharvaa has clarified that the film is not a remake or a direct connection to the original, but rather a tribute through theme and spirit.
The title translates to “Heart Murali,” and the story is very much about the heart — specifically, the part of it that holds onto feelings that were never fully expressed.

The Story
The trailer introduces Idhaya, a young man played by Atharvaa, who falls in love with his classmate — played by Preity Mukhundhan — during their school days.
He never quite finds the courage to tell her how he feels. She moves on without ever knowing. And Idhaya carries that unspoken love with him from his teenage years through college and into adulthood, a full ten-year emotional journey built around a feeling he couldn’t bring himself to say out loud.
It’s a premise that will feel instantly familiar to a lot of people, which is exactly why it works. Unrequited love — particularly the kind that goes unexpressed — is something most audiences have lived in some form, and the film leans into that universality with warmth and self-awareness.
Fahadh Faasil Steals the Trailer
If one element of the trailer has generated the most conversation, it’s Fahadh Faasil’s cameo.
He plays a character who steps in as a kind of charming guide to Idhaya’s situation — someone who understands the emotional mess of unrequited love and tries to help navigate it. His screen presence is immediate and magnetic, which is no surprise given how consistently impressive he’s been across recent projects including Patriot.
The trailer includes a genuinely funny, meta moment where Fahadh tells Idhaya their complicated love story has “a next-level twist that not even Korean dramas have.” The self-awareness lands well and gives the film a lightness that keeps its emotional premise from feeling heavy.
There’s also a clever scene where Fahadh asks his car’s AI assistant to play Vennilave Vennilave from Minsara Kanavu — a beloved Tamil classic — and the AI plays a completely different song with the same title instead. It’s a small moment, but it captures the film’s ability to blend nostalgia with modern comedy.
The Cast and Music
Alongside Atharvaa and Preity Mukhundhan, the film features Kayadu Lohar as a second female lead, with Natty Subramaniam, Ramki, Rakshan, Niharika NM, and Pragya Nagra in supporting roles. Dhanush lends his voice to one of the soundtrack’s singles, Vaama Vaama — a notable addition that has already drawn significant attention.
Thaman S has composed the entire soundtrack and also appears on screen as a character named Sachin. It marks his return to acting after 22 years, and his dual role here — both musical architect and on-screen performer — is one of the more unusual and interesting creative choices in the film’s production.
The soundtrack features five singles so far, including Idhayaa, Thangame Thangame, Vaan Vaan, Vaama Vaama sung by Dhanush, and the most recent release Kattazhagi sung by Thaman himself. The response to the music has been warm, with multiple tracks gaining traction across social media ahead of the release.
