Alice in Borderland Season 3 Review: A Mixed Return to the Deadly Games

Alice in Borderland Season 3 Review: A Mixed Return to the Deadly Games

After three long years of waiting, Alice in Borderland is back with Season 3. The question is: was it worth the wait?

The answer is complicated. Season 3 brings back everything fans loved about the series – deadly games, psychological thrills, and stunning visuals. But it also comes with some problems that might leave you feeling unsatisfied.

    What’s New This Time?

Season 3 starts with Arisu giving an interview about his experience after the meteorite hit the city. He can’t remember the games or Borderland but feels like he’s been to a faraway place. This setup immediately tells us we’re in for something different.

The story kicks off when Usagi gets kidnapped by a mysterious scholar obsessed with the afterlife, forcing Arisu back into the dangerous Borderland to save her. This time, they face the mysterious “Joker” stage that fans have been wondering about since Season 1.

    The Good Parts

Let’s start with what works. Season 3 is more brutal and deadly than ever before, which is saying something for this series. The games are as creative and terrifying as always, with each one bringing new psychological challenges.

The final game takes place in a digital reconstruction of Shibuya, with players following their digital doubles. It’s visually stunning and adds a new layer of complexity to the series’ usual format.

The production values remain top-notch. The special effects, set design, and cinematography are all excellent. Netflix clearly didn’t cut the budget for this final season.

    Where It Falls Short

However, Season 3 has some serious issues. Many reviewers note that it falls short of the first season’s greatness, with weak character development and an unsatisfying conclusion.

Some critics describe it as “chaotic, uneven, and unsatisfying” and call it the weakest season yet. The pacing feels rushed in places, and some character arcs don’t get the attention they deserve.

The biggest problem might be that Season 3 tries to do too much. It wants to wrap up the story while also introducing new mysteries and concepts. This leads to a finale that feels both overstuffed and incomplete.

    The Joker Mystery Finally Revealed

One of the season’s main draws was finally learning about the Joker card. Season 3 reveals the truth about the Joker in the Borderlands, debunking all the fan theories and speculation. Without spoiling anything, the reveal is interesting but might not satisfy everyone who’s been theorizing for years.

    Acting and Characters

Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya return as Arisu and Usagi, and they’re as solid as always. Their chemistry remains one of the show’s strongest points. The new characters introduced this season are hit-or-miss, with some feeling underdeveloped due to the limited episode count.

    The Ending Question

The season ends in a way that leaves space for more chapters to come, which might frustrate viewers hoping for a clean conclusion. Some compare the ending to Squid Game’s approach, setting up potential future storylines rather than providing closure.

    Should You Watch It?

If you’re a fan of the series, you’ll probably want to see how the story concludes, even if it’s not perfect. Some reviewers argue that the new set of deadly games proves another season was worth it.

However, go in with realistic expectations. This isn’t the masterpiece that Season 1 was. It’s a decent conclusion to the series with some great moments, but also some missed opportunities.

    Final Verdict

Alice in Borderland Season 3 is a mixed bag. It delivers on the visual spectacle and brutal games that made the series famous. But it struggles with pacing, character development, and providing a satisfying conclusion to the overall story.

    Rating: 6.5/10

Worth watching for fans, but don’t expect it to recapture the magic of the first season.
