Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway Review

Nothing compares to the maternal love and pain of a mother whose children have been taken from her forcibly under the guise of poor parenting. The official charges against her include sleeping in the same bed as her children, hand-feeding them, and applying kohl to their faces to ward off evil eye. She is labelled insane, unstable, and unfit to be a mother, but she will fight against all odds to reclaim her children.

That is the ordeal Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway subjects us to. Based on Sagarika Chakraborty’s true story and adapted from her autobiography The Journey of a Mother, the film tells the heartbreaking story of a couple whose both children were separated from them by the Norwegian government.

Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway is a Rani Mukerji show. She delivers a mind-blowing performance as a mother who goes up against the system without caring about her well-being. Rani is the epitome of motherhood in this film. The heart-touching story of the film is taken to the next level by Rani Mukerji’s brilliant act.

The film is primarily about Mukerji and Mrs. Chatterjee, and it does Anirudh no favours. He is obsessed with his citizenship application, which appears several times in the script. He is barely moved when the children are abruptly abducted by a mercenary organisation claiming to care about their well-being. He has little regard for and affection for his wife, blaming her for the disaster. Despite being saddled with a character designed to be unlikable, Anirban Bhattacharya gives his all in his Hindi film debut.

Ashima Chibber has hit the home run with this teary eyed drama that will make you root for the mother who goes up against everyone and even her husband at one point to get back her children. It is a powerful movie with many impactful messages.

However, the weakness of Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway lies in its narrative that becomes too dominant about the mother and sometimes ignores the welfare of the children for whom the battle is being fought in the court. The toxic marriage in which Debika is involved also feels underexplored at times.

To keep the attention specifically on the character of the fighting mother played by Rani, the writers have subsided a few significant issues that the film raises at certain points. For instance the issue of parenting and cultural differences is not given the much-needed due. The film could have done a bit better to explore these issue in detail. Instead it goes in a single narrative that a mother is fighting tooth and nail to somehow get her children back from the cruel authorities.

Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway is an excellent film but it could have been a great film if the writing of the film was not single-minded. Even then you should not miss out on this film in this weekend. It deserves to be watched in the theatres with your close ones.
