Sanjay Gupta’s Career: The Man Who Made Bollywood Look Cool
Sanjay Gupta started his filmmaking journey in his twenties and made his debut as a director with Aatish: Feel the Fire in 1994, starring Sanjay Dutt. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, at a time when Bollywood was dominated by family dramas and romance, Gupta brought a slick, gritty style of action filmmaking that stood out.
He was an open admirer of Quentin Tarantino, and that influence showed clearly in Kaante (2002). Shot largely in Los Angeles, the heist thriller brought together Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar, Lucky Ali and Kumar Gaurav, and became one of the most stylish Hindi films of its time. Its slow-motion walks, sunglasses and swagger are still remembered by fans more than two decades later.
Musafir (2004) and Zinda (2006) continued his dark, stylised streak. Later, Shootout at Wadala (2013) became one of his biggest hits, telling the story of gangster Manya Surve with John Abraham in the lead. In 2017, he directed Kaabil, a revenge thriller starring Hrithik Roshan as a visually impaired man, which was praised by both audiences and critics.
Gupta was also known for spotting new talent. Singer Mika Singh credited him with his first break in Bollywood, and many of his films became known for their music as much as their action.
Sanjay Gupta and Sanjay Dutt: Friendship, Fallout and Reunion
Yes, Sanjay Gupta and Sanjay Dutt did have a well-known fallout. The two were among the closest friends in the industry for over a decade. Dutt starred in Gupta’s debut film Aatish and went on to work with him in Jung, Khauff, Kaante, Musafir, Zinda and Dus Kahaniyaan. The two also ran a production house together, White Feather Films.
In 2007, the partnership ended and the two stopped talking. Reports at the time linked the split to differences over their production company. Years later, Gupta spoke about this phase in an interview, saying the rift was mostly caused by misunderstandings created by people around them. He said they did not speak for about four years, but neither of them ever attacked the other publicly.
Gupta also revealed that the fallout hit him hard professionally. He said he was out of work for about three years, as people in the industry stopped taking his calls. He even shut his office and took up a job at a friend’s hotel in Lonavala to support his family, before eventually returning to filmmaking.
The two finally made up in October 2012 at Amitabh Bachchan’s 70th birthday party, where Dutt walked up to Gupta and hugged him. Gupta later said that it was an emotional moment for both of them and that the misunderstanding ended that night.
Sanjay Dutt’s Emotional Tribute
After the news of Gupta’s death, Sanjay Dutt shared a heartfelt message on social media, calling him his brother and saying he could not believe he was gone. Dutt revealed that the two had recently been discussing Kaante 2, and promised to make the film as a tribute to his friend and fulfil his vision.
