Minimum Wage Review: Netflix’s Pizza Shop Comedy Is Messy and Very Hard to Laugh At

A show built from YouTube shorts tries to stretch its silly sketches into a full series, and the jokes struggle to survive the trip.

Minimum Wage Review: Netflix's Pizza Shop Comedy Is Messy and Very Hard to Laugh At

    Minimum Wage Review: ★½☆☆☆ (1.5/5)

Minimum Wage has a fun workplace idea and a well-known guest face in Randall Park, but the humour is loud, the acting is over the top, and the jokes rarely land. Based on the early episodes, it is a tough sit.

    Rating: ★½☆☆☆ (1.5/5)
    Platform: Netflix
    Genre: Workplace Comedy
Cast: Randall Park and an ensemble cast
    Episodes: 28 planned, short runtimes
    Release: October 26, 2026

Workplace comedies are a safe bet for streaming. Everyone has worked somewhere silly, and a bad job makes a great setting for jokes. Minimum Wage, a new Netflix series based on short videos from the American High YouTube channel, tries to use that idea. The result is a show that is loud, chaotic, and often hard to enjoy.

The series follows the staff of a pretty terrible pizza restaurant. Ryan delivers pizza in a huge, silly costume. Julie gets a chance to audition for the musical Annie, but she has no idea who Annie is. Another staff member, Aidan, has some very strange ideas that lead to a few odd scenes in the kitchen.

Things get worse when the company’s CEO, Mr. Sylvester, played by Randall Park, shows up to see how the store is doing. The staff is already close to losing the place because it hasn’t made a promotion. Then the CEO finds a rat skull, and he is told it is there as a warning to other rats. It is a weird joke, and it sets the tone for the kind of humour you can expect.

The biggest problem is that the comedy feels like a string of loose sketches. Instead of building a story or a set of characters you care about, the show jumps from one silly idea to the next. Some of the ideas might work as a short video online, but over a whole series, they start to feel thin.

The show also seems to be trying to copy the style of an office mockumentary, which has been done many times before. Without sharp writing or lovable characters, it ends up feeling like a weaker copy.

The acting doesn’t help. One reviewer felt the cast was overacting throughout, and the loud, over-the-top style can be tiring. When every joke is shouted, none of them stands out.

To be fair, there is a moment that feels close to real life. A big group of high school musical types turns up at the restaurant unannounced, which is the kind of chaos many restaurant workers know well. It is a small moment, but it shows what the show could be if it focused on real, relatable situations.

There is also a practical point. The episodes are short, between 10 and 18 minutes each. That makes the series easy to dip into if you are curious. The full run is planned to be 28 episodes, with about 14 released at the start, so there is a lot to get through if you like it.

The characters swear a lot, but to keep a family-friendly rating, even the mild swear words are bleeped. In the subtitles, that appears as stars. It can feel awkward and distracting, and it makes the humour feel even more forced.

Minimum Wage might work for fans of the original online shorts, but for most viewers it will be a struggle. The idea is simple, and the episodes are short, yet the loud acting and weak jokes make it hard to stay with. There are better ways to spend an evening.
