Lupin Season 4 Review: Omar Sy Is Locked Up, Framed, and More Magnetic Than Ever

The master thief is behind bars this time, and the bigger budget and bolder set pieces give the Netflix hit a fresh jolt.

Lupin Season 4 Review: Omar Sy Is Locked Up, Framed, and More Magnetic Than Ever

    Lupin Season 4 Review: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

Lupin Season 4 trades quiet cleverness for scale, with high stakes, fast twists, and a smart question at its core. Omar Sy is excellent again, though a few moments feel overdone and the “one last job” idea is a little familiar.

    Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
    Platform: Netflix
    Genre: Crime Thriller
    Episodes: 8
Cast: Omar Sy as Assane Diop
    Language: French

Some shows return after a long gap and struggle to find their rhythm. Lupin does the opposite. Season 4 has landed on Netflix with more money, more spectacle, and a clever twist on its own formula: what happens when a master of tricks becomes the victim of his own reputation?

Four years after he gave himself up to the police at the end of the last season, Assane Diop, played by Omar Sy, is in a maximum-security prison. He is just one week from release. He wants to keep a promise to his family, leave crime behind, and move to Senegal. Then technology across Paris is hacked, and warnings of upcoming robberies appear, signed with the name Lupin.

Suddenly, everyone thinks it is him. Assane is locked in a glass cell where guards and prisoners can watch and mock him, and all this happens barely twelve minutes into the first episode. It is a fast start, and the show never slows down much after that.

The best idea this season is the reversal. Assane has always been the one pulling the strings, but now he is at the mercy of others. Police believe he found a way to be invisible, even though he is locked up, and the story keeps you wondering what is real and who is lying.

There is also a sharp irony here. Assane first turned to crime to clear the name of his father, who was falsely accused of a jewel theft. Now, Assane is the one falsely accused, and his own son’s future hangs in the balance. It adds real heart to the action. His wish to leave the Lupin life behind also comes with a price, as copycats appear and his fame makes it harder to walk away.

The show also looks at how race shapes the way people see Assane. In earlier seasons, being underestimated helped him blend in. This time, the same bias works against him, and a blurry video is enough for some people to decide he is guilty.

You can feel the higher budget right away. The set pieces are larger, the tech is flashier, and the tone leans a little towards superhero storytelling. One critic compared the style to Marvel, which fits. The mix of escape tricks and big action gives the season a fun, blockbuster feel.

The release also arrives at an interesting time. A real-life Louvre robbery in 2025 reminded many people of the show’s first season, so the idea of a clever disguise fooling a famous museum feels fresh again.

Sy is magnetic once more. He plays Assane as charming and quick, but this time you also see tiredness and worry. A man who has always been ahead of everyone now has to trust others, and Sy sells that change well.

Not everything lands. A few scenes feel overdramatic, and the story leans on the old idea of a pro who gets pulled back for one more job. It is a familiar move, though the twists keep it from feeling stale.

If you watch, one reviewer suggests switching the audio to French instead of the default English. It keeps the show closer to its original feel.

Lupin Season 4 is a confident, entertaining return that pushes the series to a bigger stage without losing its heart. It is full of twists and driven by a star in top form.
