Think about the last time you paid at a shop. You took out your phone, opened the app, scanned the code, and typed in the amount. Jio wants to cut most of that out. At the India Mobile Congress, Reliance Jio showed off its AI Smart Glass, a pair of glasses that can handle UPI payments by sight and voice.
How UPI Payments Would Work
This is the headline feature. When you shop, you won’t need to pull out your phone to scan a QR code. You look at the shopkeeper’s QR code through your glasses, then say how much you want to pay. The system asks you to confirm, and once you say yes, the money goes through.
It sounds simple, and it could make small, quick payments much easier. But there’s a catch. Jio hasn’t shared much about how the security and authentication will work. The source also suggests the feature has been nearly finalized with NPCI, but neither company has confirmed that. For something that handles real money, those details matter a lot, so it’s wise to wait for official answers.
Two Models to Choose From
Jio has shown two versions of the glasses, built for different needs.
The first is an audio model. It has good speakers and a microphone, so you can listen to music and take calls without reaching for your phone.
The second is the more advanced one. It adds visual intelligence and an HD camera, so it can understand what’s happening in front of you in real time and respond to your commands.
JioRealityOS and the “Hello Jio” Command
Both models run on Jio’s own operating system, JioRealityOS. To use them, you simply say “Hello Jio,” and the glasses respond to your request. The company says the sensors and camera are tuned to work well in all kinds of lighting, and that the battery will last long enough to avoid frequent charging. Those are Jio’s claims for now, since there are no test results yet.
Live Translation and More
The glasses are not only about payments. They can also work as a personal translator, supporting 12 Indian languages. That could help you follow a conversation or read something in a language you don’t know. You can also watch live streaming, see route navigation and view other details right in front of your eyes.
When Will They Launch?
Nothing is official yet. The source says Reliance Jio may bring the glasses to the Indian market by the end of this year, in November or December. It also hopes for a “very affordable” price, but no price has been announced. So for now, the launch date and cost are guesses, not facts.
How Does This Fit the Smart Glasses Trend?
Jio isn’t alone in this race. Big tech companies are all pushing smart glasses, and AI is the big reason. If you want to compare, we’ve covered what Samsung and Google revealed with their smart glasses at Google I/O 2026 and what those glasses can actually do.
AI is also moving into the tools we already use every day. Google, for example, now lets its assistant do tasks for you inside the browser, as we explained in our piece on how Gemini in Chrome can now browse the web and fill forms for you.
What to Watch For
Before you get excited, a few things are still unknown. We don’t have a price, a confirmed release date or a clear picture of how payments will be secured. We also haven’t seen independent reviews of battery life or camera quality.
And if you only want better vision for now, not a gadget, there are plenty of regular options. Our list of the top 10 eyeglasses brands in India covers choices for every budget and style.
The Bottom Line
Jio’s AI Smart Glass is an interesting idea. Paying by looking at a QR code and saying “yes” could save time at the counter, and live translation in 12 Indian languages could be very useful. But until Jio shares pricing, security details, and a firm launch date, it’s best to treat this as a promising preview, not a finished product.
