Prince of Mollywood Review: A JioHotstar Comedy That the Whole Family Can Enjoy

Shani Khader's JioHotstar debut is warm, funny, and genuinely family-friendly — a clean comedy about chasing dreams that hits more than it misses.

Prince of Mollywood Review: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)

Prince of Mollywood is a breezy, charming Malayalam comedy-drama that takes one of the most relatable conflicts imaginable — a father and son fighting over a dream — and wraps it in enough wit, warmth, and film industry satire to make it consistently entertaining across its episode run. It is not groundbreaking television, but it is exactly the kind of lighthearted, feel-good content that families can genuinely watch together without anyone reaching for their phone.

    Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
    Director: Shani Khader
    Platform: JioHotstar
    Release: September 11, 2026
Language: Malayalam (also available in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi)
    Episodes: Weekly drops every Friday

There is something universally funny about a plan that backfires on the person who came up with it. You set the trap, you think you have everything figured out, and then the person you were trying to catch walks straight through the trap and uses it as a launchpad. Prince of Mollywood builds its entire premise around exactly that kind of delicious reversal — and it makes for a genuinely entertaining ride.

The story centres on Feroz, a young man who has been obsessed with cinema since he was old enough to watch films. His goal is not just to act in movies. He wants the National Award for Best Actor. While his family runs a successful business, Feroz has been quietly pursuing his dream through album songs and small acting gigs, completely ignoring the path his father has laid out for him.

His father Mamali is the Kotla family patriarch — a man with a very specific vision of what his son’s future should look like, and it does not involve a film career. Mamali wants Feroz in the business. He also wants him married to his friend’s daughter. Neither of these things interest Feroz in the slightest.

When ordinary arguments and conditions fail to pull his son back from the edge of the film world, Mamali comes up with a plan that is both spectacularly petty and genuinely hilarious. He decides to become a film producer himself. His goal is not to make a good film — it is to make a terrible one. A film so bad, so certain to flop, that Feroz loses all faith in cinema and comes crawling back to the family business.

What Mamali does not account for is that Feroz has his own plans. With the help of his friends and his girlfriend Salma, he works to become the hero of the very film his father is producing. If father wants the film to fail, son wants to ride it all the way to stardom.

The result is a comedy of competing agendas that the show mines for both laughs and some surprisingly tender moments about what fathers and sons actually want from each other, underneath all the stubbornness.

If you enjoy character-driven comedies with a strong family dynamics thread — the kind of layered comedy you might have found in Panchanama or the ensemble energy of The Revolutionaries — Prince of Mollywood hits similar notes of warm, relatable storytelling.

Director Shani Khader, working with production house Pixel Playground, keeps the tone consistently light and clean throughout.

This is a show that is not trying to be edgy or adult. It is targeting families and young audiences simultaneously, which is a genuinely difficult balance to strike, and for the most part it succeeds.

The film industry satire embedded in the premise adds a layer of knowing humour for viewers who follow Malayalam cinema closely, while the father-son conflict keeps the story accessible for everyone else.

Four episodes drop every Friday on JioHotstar, which gives the show a nice episodic momentum. The series is available in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, and Malayalam — a wide reach that suggests confidence in its universal appeal.

Prince of Mollywood will not change your life. But it will make you laugh, maybe tear up once or twice, and remind you that the best family arguments are the ones where everyone secretly wants the same thing and just cannot say it out loud.

Prince of Mollywood is now streaming on JioHotstar. New episodes every Friday.
