Pyaar Prema Kalyanam Review: A Fun Gender-Swap Rom-Com With an Uneven Finish

Elan makes his acting debut in this Netflix rom-com that flips traditional marriage roles, delivering genuine laughs and some sharp questions, even if it plays it safe by the end.

Pyaar Prema Kalyanam Review: A Fun Gender-Swap Rom-Com With an Uneven Finish

Pyaar Prema Kalyanam Review: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)

Pyaar Prema Kalyanam offers a genuinely fun premise built around reversing traditional marriage roles, with strong comic support from Radikaa Sarathkumar, though the film’s own sympathies get in the way of following its ideas to a bolder conclusion.

    Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
    Platform: Netflix
    Language: Tamil
    Genre: Romantic Comedy
    Director: Elan
Cast: Elan, Saanve Megghana, Radikaa Sarathkumar

Director Elan’s Pyaar Prema Kalyanam works as a spiritual sequel to his 2018 film Pyaar Prema Kadhal, and once again, the story centers on the chaos that erupts when families try to impose their opinions on a young couple. This time, though, Elan pushes the idea a step further.

Instead of exploring a live-in relationship, the film asks a bigger question: what happens when a newly married man is expected to leave his own home and move in with his wife’s family instead of the other way around?

The story follows Elan, played by the director himself in his acting debut, a reckless young man who quits a comfortable job in Dubai simply because he misses his mother’s cooking. Back home, he agrees to an arranged marriage set up by his strict father, without even meeting the bride beforehand.

That bride turns out to be Pavi, played by Saanve Megghana, a confident social media influencer known for calling out misogyny in her content. After an awkward first meeting where Pavi brands him a walking red flag, the two eventually fall for each other and get married.

But right at the wedding mandapam, Pavi has a change of heart and asks Elan to become a house husband instead, flipping their entire marriage dynamic upside down. The film is genuinely at its best when it uses this reversal to ask real questions about marriage.

One particularly striking moment shows Elan’s parents beaming with pride as he ties the mangalsutra, while Pavi’s parents sit in tears nearby, quietly asking why it is always assumed that the woman must be the one to leave her family behind.

It is a sharp, simple observation, and the film finds some of its funniest and most relatable moments as Elan clumsily adjusts to being a house husband, fumbling through grocery runs, laundry, and awkward interactions with his mother-in-law, played wonderfully by Radikaa Sarathkumar.

Unfortunately, the film does not stay quite as balanced once it gets going. As Elan struggles with domestic responsibilities, the story leans heavily into his discomfort for laughs, while Pavi, who is now the family’s main earner, gets comparatively little space to explore her own side of this arrangement.

When she eventually moves into Elan’s home and starts sharing chores with her sister-in-law, that same situation is played for laughs at her expense instead, which makes the film’s message about equality feel a little one-sided by comparison.

The supporting cast helps keep things entertaining throughout. Radikaa Sarathkumar is a clear highlight, bringing effortless comic energy to her role as Pavi’s mother, while Elango Kumaravel stands out as Pavi’s surprisingly progressive father, delivering some of the film’s more pointed dialogue about privilege and gender roles.

Elan himself takes a little getting used to as a first-time actor, occasionally relying on repetitive expressions of shock, but his comic timing works well once the film settles into its groove.

Saanve Megghana brings real conviction to Pavi, playing her as someone who genuinely believes in the freedom she talks about online, even if the writing sometimes sidelines her as the story shifts focus toward Elan’s personal transformation.

Where the film ultimately falls short is its ending. After spending most of its runtime questioning traditional ideas around marriage and gender roles, Pyaar Prema Kalyanam settles for a safer, more conventional resolution rather than following its own arguments through to something bolder.

True equality is not simply about making a man experience what women have traditionally had to deal with; it is about questioning why either partner should be boxed into these roles at all, and the film stops just short of making that leap.

Even with these shortcomings, Pyaar Prema Kalyanam remains a genuinely enjoyable watch, driven by strong performances and a premise that at least attempts to spark real conversation. It is funny, occasionally thoughtful, and refreshingly willing to put a man in a position usually reserved for women on screen. It simply could have been braver with where it chose to land.
