Bhopal, March 8: A tragic road accident in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul district claimed the life of a 36-year-old man, while his wife and six-year-old son were seriously injured after a speeding container truck collided with their motorcycle on Sunday.
The accident occurred near Jhi Tapa junction on the Betul–Nagpur National Highway, a busy route frequently used by heavy vehicles. According to police officials, the container truck was moving at high speed when the driver suddenly lost control. The vehicle broke through the road divider and entered the opposite lane before crashing directly into the motorcycle carrying the family.
The victim has been identified as Vikas Rao (36), a resident of Narmadapuram (Hoshangabad). Rao was travelling with his wife and young son to Mo Harkheda village to attend a terahvin ceremony, a traditional thirteenth-day mourning ritual held after someone’s death. What was meant to be a routine journey turned fatal within moments due to the truck’s apparent overspeeding and negligence.
Police said the impact of the collision was severe, and Rao suffered critical injuries. He was declared dead at the scene. Meanwhile, his wife and son sustained multiple fractures and serious trauma. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital in Betul for treatment. Doctors said their condition is stable but critical, and the child is currently under intensive medical care.
Local police arrived shortly after the accident, secured the area, and began an investigation. Authorities revealed that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash, leading police to launch a search operation. The container truck involved in the accident has been seized.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to rash driving, causing death by negligence, and hit-and-run.
Preliminary investigations suggest that overspeeding and possible driver fatigue or distraction may have caused the accident. Authorities have also stated that the truck’s fitness certificate and the driver’s records will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police officials have assured that a thorough probe will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the crash and ensure accountability for the tragic incident.
