Vungzagin Valte, BJP MLA from Manipur’s Thanlon constituency, died on Saturday at a private hospital in Gurugram after battling serious injuries sustained during the ethnic violence in the state on May 4, 2023 . He was 62.
Valte, a senior tribal leader belonging to the Zomi community, was elected to the Manipur Assembly from Thanlon constituency in Churachandpur district. He had been undergoing prolonged medical treatment in Delhi following the brutal attack that left him critically injured and partially paralysed .
As his health condition worsened earlier this month, he was airlifted from Imphal to New Delhi on February 8 for advanced medical care. He was admitted to a private hospital in Gurugram, where he breathed his last on Saturday afternoon .
The violent assault took place in Imphal shortly after Valte had attended a meeting with former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The attack left him with multiple injuries, while his driver was killed in the incident .
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the demise of the veteran legislator. In a post on X, he said that Vungzagin Valte would be remembered for his outstanding service to the people of Manipur and for his insightful interventions in the Assembly. The Prime Minister conveyed condolences to his family, friends and supporters .

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla also expressed grief, describing Valte’s passing as an irreparable loss to the people of the state and public service. In a message shared on social media, the Governor extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family .
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said he was profoundly saddened by the untimely demise of the Thanlon MLA. He described Valte as a dedicated public representative and a compassionate leader who devoted his life to the welfare and holistic development of Manipur. The Chief Minister noted that the state had lost a sincere leader and a pillar of strength who always stood for the welfare of his people .
Valte had earlier appealed for unity among members of the Zo community amid the ongoing ethnic crisis in Manipur. His death is being mourned across the state, with leaders and organisations remembering him as a committed public servant who worked tirelessly for his constituency.
