COVID-19 Update: Blood Groups O is Most Protected Against The Virus

There is a ton of researches going on about the COVID-19 and each day we found something new that we didn’t know before. We saw that the blood groups O are the most protected against coronavirus according to the new study and their chances of having organ failure are also less likely.

Whereas, individuals with blood groups A and AB are more receptive to the virus and it can cause more damage for such individuals.

The research and its observations are from the journal Blood Advances and we’re going to take a deep dive into how they get to these results. Now, there are a total of two studies which help us conclude these facts, let’s move on them and see what they tell us.

    Study 1st

The study was conducted over a database consisting of Danish health registry data of more than 4,73,000 Covid-19 positive individuals.

Now, the data shows that individuals with A and AB blood groups were the most affected while the blood groups O individuals were the minority in the contractor of COVID-19 cases.

On further study, the rate of infection also showed the same trends, and even where ethnicity was ruled out, it showed the same observation.

So, from the first study, the observations were quite clear as we’ve mentioned before and blood groups O is considered to be the safest type when talking about coronavirus contraction.

Dr. Torben Barington, of Odense University Hospital, who is also the lead author of the published study commented on the research.

He said, “It is very important to consider the proper control group because blood type prevalence may vary considerably in different ethnic groups and different countries.”

He added further on“We have the advantage of a strong control group — Denmark is a small, ethnically homogeneous country with a public health system and a central registry for lab data. So our control is population-based, giving our findings a strong foundation.”

    Study 2nd

The second study was done in Vancouver, Canada over 95 critically ill Covid-19 patients in a hospital. The patients were all the serious and ongoing process to make their conditions were going on with the study.

Amidst all this, the data showed that the patient who was more severely ill belonged to the A and AB than the other two blood groups.

These two groups had more members who were to be put on mechanical ventilation. And the rate of their organ failure was also greater with the need to do dialysis and other procedures.

It was also noted that the patients belonging to the blood group A and AB were spending more time in ICU than the other two blood groups.

Dr. Mypinder Sekhon, of the University of British Columbia, who is also the lead author of the study also commented on this.

He said, “The unique part of our study is our focus on the severity effect of blood type on Covid-19.”

He added “We observed this lung and kidney damage, and in future studies, we will want to tease out the effect of blood group and Covid-19 on other vital organs. Of particular importance, as we continue to traverse the pandemic, we now have a wide range of survivors who are exiting the acute part of Covid-19, but we need to explore mechanisms by which to risk stratify those with longer-term effects.”
