Meet Ashutosh Sharma – The Boy Who Played an Impactful Knock, Helping Delhi Capitals Secure a Stunning Victory Over Punjab Kings

There’s a certain kind of IPL player that fans fall in love with quickly — the ones who walk in when the game is hanging by a thread and somehow make it look easy. Ashutosh Sharma is becoming exactly that player for the Delhi Capitals. His knock against Punjab Kings in IPL 2026 was another reminder of what he’s capable of when the pressure is at its highest and why DC kept faith in him heading into this season.

A Small-Town Boy With Big Cricket Dreams

Ashutosh was born on September 15, 1998, in Ratlam — a city in Madhya Pradesh that doesn’t get many cricket headlines. His background was modest; his father, Ram Babu Sharma working as a compounder at a government hospital, and the path to professional cricket was anything but straightforward.

At eight years old, he moved to Indore to train at the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association academy. That’s a significant step for any young child to take, let alone one from a family watching every rupee carefully. But the commitment was there from the beginning.

Who Is Ashutosh Sharma - The DC Star Winning Hearts in IPL 2026

Training Under Experienced Coaches Changed His Career

Ashutosh trained under Amay Khurasiya — a former India international — in his formative years, and the experience of working with someone who had played at the highest level clearly shaped how he approaches batting. His natural hitting ability caught the eyes early, and he started making his presence felt in junior cricket tournaments before earning opportunities at the domestic level.

The early signs were there. But signs and results are different things, and the road ahead still had some difficult stretches.

Domestic Cricket Struggles Made Him Stronger

He made his T20 debut for Madhya Pradesh in the 2017–18 Zonal T20 League, and List A appearances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy followed. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2019–20 gave him a platform to show his power-hitting, and he made the most of it with several strong performances.

But cricket doesn’t always reward talent on a straight line. Limited opportunities and some friction within the team setup slowed his progress. Another player might have drifted away from the sport at that point. Ashutosh didn’t. He waited, kept working, and trusted that the opportunity would come again.

The Railways Move Helped Him Restart His Journey

In 2023, Ashutosh joined Railways as a junior clerk — a practical decision that gave him financial stability while keeping the cricket door open. It turned out to be one of the better decisions of his career.

Playing domestic cricket for Railways, he produced performances that simply couldn’t be ignored. During the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023, he hit the fastest T20 fifty by an Indian — 11 balls — breaking a record that had stood in Yuvraj Singh’s name for years. That innings landed with a thud across the cricket world.

He followed it up with a Ranji Trophy century against Gujarat in early 2024, proving that his batting had genuine depth and wasn’t just about six-hitting exhibitions.

IPL Journey: From Punjab Kings to Delhi Capitals

Punjab Kings picked Ashutosh up for ₹20 lakh ahead of IPL 2024 — a modest price for a player who had been announcing himself loudly in domestic cricket. He played limited matches but made enough of an impression to get people talking. Across his appearances, he scored 189 runs at a strike rate above 167, with performances against the Mumbai Indians and the Gujarat Titans showing he could handle big-match pressure without flinching.

Delhi Capitals saw enough to make a move. They signed him for ₹3.8 crore ahead of IPL 2025, and that investment paid off quickly.

    The Knock That Changed Everything

If one innings properly introduced Ashutosh Sharma to a wider audience, it was his unbeaten 66 off 31 balls against the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025. Delhi Capitals were in trouble when he walked to the crease, chasing 210 and losing wickets at the wrong time. He didn’t look at the scoreboard and panicked. He just batted.

By the time he was done, DC had won, and Ashutosh had a new set of fans who hadn’t really noticed him before that evening. That inning was the kind that changes how a player is perceived — suddenly, everyone knew who he was.

Impactful Knock Against Punjab Kings in IPL 2026

The 2026 season has seen him carry that form forward. His innings against Punjab Kings — his former franchise — was another example of the kind of match-finishing that DC now relies on him for. In a high-scoring game, he came in, read the situation correctly, and played smart, aggressive cricket that helped push Delhi over the line.

He didn’t need to throw the bat from ball one. He understood what the moment required and delivered it. That game awareness, combined with his natural hitting ability, is what separates him from a player who can just slog.

Why Ashutosh Sharma Is So Dangerous in T20 Cricket

The short answer is that he’s fearless without being reckless. He attacks hard lengths; he’s particularly strong against pace in the death overs, and his bat swing through the ball is clean enough to clear boundaries without needing to hit it perfectly.

But the more interesting development over the past couple of seasons is the improvement in his shot selection. He’s become more measured about when to take risks and when to rotate strike, which makes him harder to bowl at and harder to set fields against.

Delhi Capitals See Him as a Long-Term Finisher

DC kept Ashutosh for IPL 2026 because they believe they’ve found something worth building around. His strike rate consistently sits above 160; he shows up in tight situations, and his presence in the middle order gives the batting lineup a reliable, aggressive option in the final overs.

At 27, he’s at an age where the next few seasons will define the kind of career he ends up having. The IPL form is there. The domestic record is strong. A national call-up feels like it’s becoming less a question of if and more a question of when.

The Story That Cricket Fans Love

The reason Ashutosh Sharma’s story resonates is that it’s built on things people respect — persistence through difficult periods, a willingness to take a step sideways to keep moving forward, and the patience to stay ready when opportunities were slow to arrive.

From Ratlam to Railways to Delhi Capitals’ most trusted finisher, his journey has been anything but smooth. But that’s what makes the current chapter worth following.
