The wait is finally over. After two months of outstanding cricket, last-over thrillers, record-breaking performances, and some moments that cricket fans will talk about for years, the IPL 2026 season comes down to one match. And the storylines going into this final are genuinely special.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru versus Gujarat Titans. Sunday, May 31. Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. 7:30 PM IST. RCB’s chase history at Narendra Modi Stadium as Rajat Patidar’s side looks to become only the third team ever to successfully defend the IPL crown
The Big Question: Can RCB Make History?
RCB won their maiden IPL title in 2025 — that alone was a moment a massive fanbase had been waiting for over two decades. But now, Rajat Patidar and his team have the chance to do something that only two franchises have ever managed in IPL history.
Only Chennai Super Kings (2010 and 2011) and Mumbai Indians (2019 and 2020) have successfully defended the IPL title. If RCB win tonight, they join that elite company. That’s the kind of history that changes how a franchise is remembered forever.
Patidar himself stands on the edge of something remarkable. If he lifts the trophy tonight, he will become only the third captain ever to defend an IPL crown — joining MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. That’s a list nobody takes lightly.
RCB’s Road to the Final
RCB didn’t just qualify for the final — they announced themselves in the loudest possible way.
In Qualifier 1 against the Gujarat Titans in Dharamsala, RCB posted 254/5 — the highest total ever recorded in an IPL playoff match. Rajat Patidar led from the front with an unbeaten 93 off just 33 balls, an innings that was breathtaking in its aggression and timing. Gujarat Titans, chasing 255, never really looked like they’d get close and were bowled out for 162. The 92-run margin told its own story.
Throughout the season, RCB have been the most complete side in the tournament. Virat Kohli has been the team’s backbone with the bat, scoring 600 runs across the campaign and looking as dangerous and hungry as ever. Patidar and Devdutt Padikkal have given the middle order real stability, while Venkatesh Iyer has provided the kind of aggressive hitting that changes matches in the final overs.

The bowling has been just as impressive. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been outstanding — 28 wickets in the season, swinging the ball both ways and delivering in pressure situations with the kind of calm experience that only comes from years at the highest level. Josh Hazlewood has brought genuine pace and discipline, while Rasikh Salam and Krunal Pandya have chipped in with crucial wickets at key moments.
Simply put, RCB look like a team that believes they can win on any given night — and that belief is one of the most dangerous things an opponent can face in a knockout match.
Gujarat Titans: The Home Side with Something to Prove
Here’s where the final gets genuinely interesting. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is GT’s home ground. And GT know this venue intimately — they won their first IPL title here in 2022, in their debut season, which is one of the most remarkable achievements in IPL history.
But they also lost a final here in 2023 against Chennai Super Kings. So the ground holds both triumph and heartbreak for Shubman Gill’s side.
GT’s route to the final took a detour through Qualifier 2, where they had to beat Rajasthan Royals after losing to RCB in Qualifier 1. And the way they did it was stunning. Chasing 215, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan walked out to bat and proceeded to put on a 167-run opening stand that completely dismantled RR’s bowling attack. Gill scored a magnificent century, Sudharsan made a fifty, and GT completed their highest-ever successful run chase with seven wickets to spare.

That kind of performance, in an elimination game, with everything on the line — it tells you GT are not here to make up the numbers.
Shubman Gill has been GT’s heartbeat with the bat all season. His 722 runs make him the second highest scorer of IPL 2026, just behind Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and barely ahead of his opening partner Sudharsan, who has scored 710 runs. When both of them get going together, they are arguably the most dangerous opening pair in this tournament.
On the bowling front, Kagiso Rabada leads the Purple Cap race with 28 wickets. The South African fast bowler has been relentless all season — sharp, accurate, and capable of taking wickets in any phase of the game. Mohammed Siraj, Rashid Khan, and Prasidh Krishna complete a bowling attack that can trouble any batting lineup on its day.
GT’s one concern heading into the final is their middle order, which has been inconsistent throughout the season. Jos Buttler, Washington Sundar, and Jason Holder have the experience and ability to perform — but they haven’t always done so when GT needed them most. If RCB build early pressure and expose that middle order, the match could swing decisively.
Head-to-Head and the Season So Far
RCB hold the overall head-to-head advantage against GT with five wins in nine meetings. This season, the two sides have met three times — RCB won two, GT won one, and that one GT victory came at this very ground in Ahmedabad.
That’s a small but relevant detail. GT know they can win at home against RCB. They’ve done it this season already.

What to Expect Tonight
This final has the ingredients of a classic. Two in-form teams, two outstanding captains, and a venue that has already witnessed IPL history more than once.
RCB bring momentum, confidence, and the experience of having won this tournament just twelve months ago. They know what winning feels like, and they know what it takes to get there.
GT bring home advantage, a burning desire to avenge their Qualifier 1 defeat, and two of the most prolific batters of this entire season in Gill and Sudharsan.
One thing is almost certain — if GT’s top order fires and their middle order holds up, this will go right down to the wire. And if Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar get going for RCB, all that GT bowling quality will have their hands full.
The IPL 2026 season has been extraordinary from start to finish. Tonight, it ends with one team lifting the trophy and making history.
The question is, which one?
