Which Vitamin Deficiency Causes Anxiety and Sudden Increase in Heartbeat?

Sometimes, experiencing mild anxiety and an increased heartbeat is normal, but if it happens frequently, it could be a warning sign. One possible reason behind this is a deficiency of Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that plays a vital role in the production of red blood cells, nerve function, and DNA synthesis. Its deficiency can lead to various health issues, including heart palpitations, where the heartbeat feels faster or irregular.

Why Does Vitamin B12 Deficiency Cause Anxiety?

One key reason is its impact on red blood cell production. Vitamin B12 is crucial for the creation of healthy red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout the body. When B12 levels are low, the body produces fewer, larger, and less efficient red blood cells—a condition known as megaloblastic anemia. This leads to reduced oxygen supply to tissues, including the heart, forcing it to work harder to compensate.

This increased cardiac effort can appear as a rapid heartbeat or anxiety. In some cases, it may trigger angina, a condition where narrowed coronary arteries reduce blood flow to the heart. Anemia-related oxygen deficiency can worsen angina symptoms, especially during physical exertion, and cause a faster heartbeat.

    Other Symptoms of B12 Deficiency

Vitamin B12 deficiency can also affect the nervous system, which helps regulate heart rhythm. Low B12 levels may impair nerve function and disrupt the autonomic nervous system’s control over the heart rate, leading to irregular or rapid heartbeat. These neurological effects can intensify cardiovascular strain caused by anemia, raising the risk of palpitations.

A Concern for Vegetarians and Vegans

Other symptoms of B12 deficiency like fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath can further aggravate heart-related issues. People who do not consume non-vegetarian foods or follow a vegan diet are at a higher risk of B12 deficiency. Therefore, it’s important for them to monitor their B12 levels regularly.
