Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan Release Cancelled After CBFC Issue; 100 Crore Advance Booking Done

Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan Release Cancelled After CBFC Issue; 100 Crore Advance Booking Done

Ever since Thalapathy Vijay announced that he would retire from films to enter politics full-time, fans have been eagerly waiting for his final movie. His last film was later titled “Jana Nayagan”. Scheduled for a Pongal (Sankranti) release, the teaser of Jana Nayagan received an excellent response, and as soon as advance bookings opened, tickets started selling rapidly.

However, after getting caught in censor-related issues, the matter reaching court, and the controversy escalating, the release of Jana Nayagan on 9 January was ultimately cancelled. The troubles with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) have caused significant damage to Vijay’s film, raising doubts about whether it will receive the same level of response whenever it finally releases.

    Makers Officially Announce the Postponement

Jana Nayagan was fully ready for a theatrical release, with advance bookings progressing at a strong pace. But when the CBFC failed to issue the censor certificate until Tuesday, the makers finally approached the High Court.

After hearings on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Madras High Court stated that its verdict would be delivered on 9 January. Even if the decision were to favour the makers on the release day, obtaining the censor certificate would still take time. By Wednesday itself, fans had accepted that the film would not release on its scheduled date. Late Wednesday night, the makers shared an official statement confirming the postponement.

In their statement, KVN Productions said:
“With a heavy heart, we share this update with our audiences and stakeholders. The release of ‘Jana Nayagan’, which was eagerly awaited on 9 January, is being postponed due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control.”
The makers also confirmed that a new release date would be announced soon. Meanwhile, Vijay’s political party TVK has described the controversy surrounding Jana Nayagan as a political conspiracy against the actor. Regardless of the court’s final decision, it is clear that the film has suffered due to the controversy and the delayed release.

    ₹100 Crore Advance Booking

Trade reports reveal that before the postponement announcement, Jana Nayagan had already generated over ₹40 crore in gross advance bookings from overseas markets alone for its opening. Advance bookings for the opening weekend were also extremely strong, adding nearly ₹60 crore more.

This means Jana Nayagan had already done around ₹100 crore worth of business purely through advance bookings. According to trade sources, the excitement was so high that the film was sold at very premium prices. As a result, it needed to collect at least ₹500 crore worldwide to be considered a success. Advance booking figures suggested the film was moving rapidly towards that target.

    Losing the Perfect Release Window

Jana Nayagan was planned as a Sankranti release, with the film set to hit theatres on 9 January, followed by the Sankranti holiday on 14 January. This would have ensured a massive opening weekend, along with strong mid-week collections in South India due to festive celebrations.

While the court’s final decision will be known on Friday, securing such a safe and powerful box office release window now seems difficult. Even if the issue is resolved quickly, the chances of achieving the same level of box office impact appear lower than before.

    Fans Remain the Biggest Strength

The biggest advantage in Jana Nayagan’s favour is Thalapathy Vijay’s deeply loyal and globally spread fan base. With this being his final film, fans are emotionally invested. Therefore, regardless of the new release date, they may be willing to book tickets once again.

Before the postponement, Jana Nayagan was on track for a worldwide opening of over ₹150 crore on Day 1. Now, the big question is whether fans will show the same level of excitement and support for their Thalapathy when the new release date is announced.
