Jana Nayagan Review: Vijay’s Farewell Film Is Loud, Emotional, and Frustratingly Familiar

    Jana Nayagan Movie Review

    Jana Nayagan Movie Rating: 2.5/5

Jana Nayagan was never going to be just another film. Billed as Thalapathy Vijay’s final outing before he stepped away from cinema to serve as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, it arrived in theatres on July 23, 2026, after a delay of more than seven months over its CBFC certificate. The hype, the legal battles, and the emotional weight of a superstar’s goodbye had already turned the release into an event. The question was always whether the film itself could live up to the occasion. The honest answer is — only partly.

    Jana Nayagan Story

Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is an official remake of the Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari. Vijay plays Vetri Kondan, an ex-cop with his own code of justice, who takes on a powerful system of corruption and dirty politics. Bobby Deol plays the main antagonist, while Mamitha Baiju appears as Viji, the young girl at the emotional centre of Vetri’s journey. Pooja Hegde plays Kayal, and the supporting cast includes Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Nassar, and Sunil.

The plot follows the familiar protector-and-protege template, padded with speeches on women’s empowerment, corruption, and communal harmony. Anyone who has seen Mersal or Sarkar will recognise the rhythm almost immediately.

    What Works

Vijay. That is the film’s biggest strength, and everyone involved clearly knows it. Even at 183 minutes, his screen presence rarely dips. The mass moments, the punch dialogues, the trademark dance sequences — they all land exactly the way his fans want them to. Theatres erupted on day one, and for the faithful, this is less a movie and more a three-hour celebration of everything Vijay has meant to Tamil cinema.

Anirudh Ravichander’s background score does a lot of heavy lifting, elevating several mass and emotional stretches. Sathyan Sooryan’s cinematography presents the action cleanly, and the film maintains a steady pace despite its length. A few clever ideas in the first half also suggest the sharper film this could have been.

    What Does Not Work

The writing. For a farewell film, Jana Nayagan is surprisingly lazy in its screenplay. The first half plays like a standard over-the-top Vijay entertainer, but the second half slides into what feels like an extended political manifesto, with Vetri lecturing on what Tamil Nadu needs rather than driving an actual story forward. The line between the character and the politician blurs so often that the film stops working as cinema.

The supporting cast suffers the most. Bobby Deol gets decent screen time but an underwritten role. Pooja Hegde looks graceful but has very little to do. Prakash Raj plays yet another familiar politician. Even the VFX looks patchy in places for a film mounted on a reported budget of over Rs 300 crore.

    Performances

Vijay delivers a high-energy, committed performance and carries the entire film on his shoulders. Mamitha Baiju makes a genuine impression in the emotional portions and is arguably the only other actor given real material. The rest of the ensemble makes its presence felt without ever getting the chance to matter.

    Flickonclick Verdict

Jana Nayagan is a fan-service farewell, not a filmmaking triumph. As a tribute reel to Vijay’s stardom, it delivers whistles, tears, and nostalgia in generous supply. As a standalone film, it is a routine remake stretched thin by speeches and spectacle. Hardcore Vijay fans should watch it in a packed theatre — that experience cannot be replicated at home. Neutral viewers may want to wait for the OTT release.
